$1:
The season hasn't even started yet, and already the minds behind an NHL video game have bad news for fans of the Vancouver Canucks.

EA Games revealed the results of its annual simulation on Thursday, showing the Canucks ending the season with a dismal 63 points. The simulation is based on EA's recently released game NHL 17.

If the results of NHL 17 are to be trusted, the Canucks will place last this season not only in the Western Conference, but in the entire league.
Related Stories

Although the results of the simulation are only based on a game, fans have reason to worry with the team finishing last season with only 75 points. The team finished second-to-last in the conference beating Edmonton by five points.

Most of the NHL's other Canadian teams didn't fare much better, with Calgary ending the season with 84 points and Edmonton with 85. With Edmonton in 8th and Calgary in 9th, Winnipeg landed in 11th place in the west with 82 points.

In the Eastern Conference, the Toronto Maple Leafs eked into the 8th spot with 91 points, while the Ottawa Senators placed 11th with 87 points.

In Montreal, however, the Canadiens were led into postseason with 99 points thanks to "a healthy Carey Price," bringing the team to second place in the conference.

Are expectations really that bad this year ?

I heard something about that out of the corner of my ear today. Hard to believe that one made the news. But they're not the first. I've heard predictions from Toronto to Calgary on how Canucks will be finishing in the basement. I've even heard it from a few claiming to be locals. (Most likely immigrants from the east. 8) )

I don't think the east of Cranbrook crowd enjoyed all the years the Canucks were the last Canadian team standing. And now they're kind of squinting their eyes, crossing their fingers and hoping to 'wishful think' us into the basement.

Not going to happen.

However, oops, sorry I didn't really answer your question.

Depends who you ask.

The basic facts are it's generally agreed the Canucks are in a rebuild phase, however while acknowledging that phase of back to the drawing board, the Canucks management claims they will always play to win. I've heard Trevor Linden suggest he would consider success this year to be making the playoffs. Not winning the cup (not this year), just making the playoffs.

Up until recently it was hard to find somebody who talked hockey professionally to say they thought that possible, but I'm getting the feeling some minds are beginning to change even amongst those goofs.

If you hang around the spots where fans hang out you can find lots like me. We think making the playoffs is possible, and we didn't have to change our minds to think it.

There's detailed explanation as to why, but do you really want to wade through those pages?

So just, yeah, me personally, I think the Canucks can make the playoffs this year, and I would consider that a success for this particular year. Also I think there's reason to believe the team is better this year, and it will be better next year and better still the year after that.

There's reason to think that.

The last Canucks preseason game is in Edmonton tonight starting at 6:00pm PT....

Hyack @ Sat Oct 08, 2016 7:45 pm

I'd say the Canucks are about ready for the new season, they seem to be playing about the same as last year......being outshot 10-5 in the first period and 18-3 in the 2nd, having only 1 shot in the first half of the period...they've taken the only 2 penalties and have managed just over 30% in the faceoff circle.....Thankfully Markstrom has been able to keep them in the game.....

N_Fiddledog @ Sat Oct 08, 2016 8:24 pm

And then they released the Kraken.

Granlund scores. 3-2 Vancouver.

2 minutes left to play.

We win!!! [cheer]

Damn, both Baertschi and Granlund managed to score in the final period to give the Canucks a 3-2 win. This brings their preseason record to 3-3-1..... The regular season opens next Saturday with Calgary in town, followed Sunday with the Hurricanes coming to town.

Scary defensive duel tonight.

Vancouver scores on itself then comes back to win in a shootout.

Calgary goes winless in 3 games and I don't care. :P

Vancouver wins its home opener 2-1.
