Good idea. They should do a lot more of this.
If the bar is supposed to be responsible for what people do on their premises then should hockey arenas be sued because of the fights and etc. that typically occur at hockey games?
This is a silly, statist action and if the courts uphold it then you can just watch as insurance costs and lending costs for bars go up. And those costs, of course, will be passed along to you when you want to lift a brew at the local pub.

Well, that way the people using the bars pay instead of the general public. And it will force bars to be much more proactive in stopping fights. Of course the dicks who did the beating should be sued as well, but they probably don't have any money. I'm glad they're also suing the police for not doing their jobs properly.
I would like to see more of this, where health costs are recovered if it can be shown they were incurred by negligence etc. It's health insurance after all - if you cause an accident with your car your insurance goes up.
And it has nothing to do with satism. US insurance companies, I'm sure, fall all over themselves suing to try to recover costs. In the US that's just a daisy chain of insurance companies all trying to get a leg up, but here it's the government doing it's job and being prudent with it's money.

$1:
The lawsuit doesn't specify a dollar figure for the health costs.
So what are they suing for exactly?
Other than that, I think this is ridiculous. BC government sues? Really??

This is not an insurance company filing the lawsuit. Not the same thing.

It happens all the time (note the article says 300 times a year on average in BC). Why should you're (our) tax dollars go to pay the medical expenses incured because of someone else's neglect and or illegal activity?
This seems like a no brainer, I'd even extend the right to sue for costs of medical care to smokers for related illnesses. Why are we paying for the bad habits of smokers?

So you folks are suing fat and inactive people, right?
That sounds like a good idea. As a matter of fact I've noticed a little plumpness myself I'd better go for a few laps and cut down on my burger intake till hockey season starts again.
I'd hate to be the fat ass telling folks to quit smoking and/or get some excercise. Maybe if we took our own health a little more seriously the costs of our healthcare would not be so huge.

Well, that would mean we don't need a health BC anymore. Would save a shitload of money too. Because EVERY time you go to a doctor, it is because of neglect. Cancer? I'm sure you ate veggies with lead, or you smoked, or you drank, or you had unprotected sex or you didn't exercise enough in your life.
Broke your leg? Yeah, well, you should have watched what you were doing so you didn't trip (or whatever the reason was).
And so on...
Why should your (our) tax dollars go to pay medical expenses incured because of someone else's neglect and illegal activity?
Good question.
An even better one is why the bars money should go to it either?
Maybe the people that should be paying are those that actually commited the illegal activities and neglect...if they have no money, let them work it off in prison.

It costs us what, $150,000 to keep the average prisoner. So how will they ever work off this debt?

If it comes with a warning lable with a graphic picture of someone dead, dying or sick, then the health risks associated with that activity ahouls be at your own risk.
If you break your leg playing soccer I'm ok with footing the bill.

Why should you have tax payer supported health care at all?

And what if I break my leg walking on the side walk, tripping over... I dunno, nothing? A pebble?
Btw, if I have to foot the bill whenever my kids are playing anything and breaking something, I am not going to put my kids into any sports, nor will I put myself into any sports. Also, I would tell the school that my kids are not allowed to play, because I cannot afford the damage when they get hurt or hurt someone else.

Why should the tax payer pay taxes at all? Let everybody just pay for their own things! Including the streetlight in front of your house and the road we drive on! I will build my own hospital, and will only treat ME ME ME ME ME!!!
AWAY WITH TAXES!!!
