My kids are in gymnastics, and I HAVE TO volunteer 10 hours per child to the club, or pay $ 10 an hour.
Since training kids is not my thing, I decided to pay that money extra to the club. But... I don't like it. I just have no choice.

There is no moral good achieved in compelling someone to do a deed that benefits another.

Mandatory community service or else what?

I would be in for a tuition-for-service programme, whereby a university student would dedicate a fixed number of hours per week to either a community service postion or in the military reserves, and in return his tuition fees would be waived.

All sports need volunteers. Its parents that do it. 10 hours per child is absolutely nothing...try Hockey, Lacrosse or Baseball. It keeps costs down and really it is being part of a kids life. Thats the reality of sport and if parents dont want to give up their time then they should have to pay. But its a choice to put kids in sports, mandatory volunteer work for everyone is completely different. Being forced to do something because you are a citizen would never work.

You do realize it is on top of the $ 100 I pay each month per kid for 3 hours of gym per week?
If I could do the books or something, I would be happy to help out, but that is not the choice I have ;-)

Yes I do realize that...that is the reality of sport. I have been on the executive for a Lacrosse association for 8 years. If it wasnt for parents volunteering the costs would be way too high. You might have something there, about doing the books or asking if there is anything else you could do...approach the executive. But its a choice as I said before to put kids in sports, so it comes with the territory. Wait til you have to travel ...but the trips are the fun part

No wonder kids get fat...
Why isn't it subsidized a bit? For the sake of the kids? I mean, lots of people can't afford putting their kids in any type of sports...

Oh there is plenty of programs but the funding is limited...and you can right off up to 500 per child on income tax up to the age of 16. But Ya I know...3 boys and being a single parent I have had to be creative. I have never seen child support. The schools, Boys and Girls Club and sports associations have forms for partial funding...it helps but the cost sure as hell hurts. There is a program called kidsport...

It wouldn't be volunteering if it were mandatory. I think people should volunteer to help others, but it should be encourage and not made mandatory.

So do you think everyone should be forced to volunteer some time? How about we force everyone to work, how about that?

I'm sure this idea would be great if jobs existed for every adult in Canada.

coaster_dot @ Wed Apr 29, 2009 10:09 pm

Mandatory...no
Tax Breaks....sure

I know that some schools in my area are requiring so many hours of volunteer work in order to graduate. Which isn't fair because many teens are already busy enough with school, home, and a job.

aingaran @ Wed Apr 29, 2009 10:17 pm

I'm sure if there's some sort of incentive (other than the satisfaction of helping the needy or someone less fortunate than you) can motivate some to volunteer .

So tax breaks shouldn't be ruled out. As long as the volunteer work is legitimate. Unlike the "charities" that have been scamming Revenue Canada for years.

No, but there IS a moral good achieved by compelling someone to learn why doing deeds that help others is an important part of a meaningful human existence. Requireing highschool students to perform community involvement is an essential part of public education, IMHO.
