Mandatory community service?

Hey everyone, I saw this topic on another forum and decided it was something worth debating.

What do you think of mandatory community service for every resident? In other words every person must volunteer a few hours a year in their community.

Is this too much of a socialist idea?

Personally I think it is a good idea, but does seem too much a little extreme. What would happen if someone does not do their hours?

Personally I think a tax break for doing some volunteer work in the community would be pretty neat idea.

Whats your take on this?

No. Tax Breaks(or other Incentives) for it is ok, but Mandatory is not.

NO thanks, my life is my own to do what I want with it.

how about we get the inmates ie chain gangs to do that work.....Liberals would hate that idea. :wink:

I'm sure the unions would also be crying about their overpaid underskilled jobs evaporating by volunteers.

I already volunteer and I dont want to get stuck with people that are mandated and dont want to be there. You either have it in you or you dont, its a personal choice.

It's not the worst idea, but TatGirl's right, you'd likely get a lot of people who didn't want to be there and would be more of a hurt than a help.

It's not that far removed from the idea of mandatory military service though if you think about it.

In a country that has inspirational leadership and pride in their community and fellow citizens civic duity and volunteerism comes natural.

But alas we live in a country where the PM shakes his own child's hand on the first day of school instead of hugging her, and we have guys like ruez and mtbr who can't even be bothered to give us more than four letters of their names nevermind get off their asses and teach boy scouts, clean up garbage or organize the Christmas parade for their town.

This sounds just like....................let me think..........................the Soviet Union, "you will work where we tell you, when we tell you, doing what we tell you, with no pay for the betterment of our socialist society and you will enjoy it".

I guess if we didn't do our community service we'd end up in a lovely socialist reeducation gulag mining salt? This smacks of Communist China, who apparently are idolized by which ever stupid socialist tree hugging hippie put this idea forward.

Many European countries have mandatory military service and/or trade skill training (machinist, plumber, electrician ...).
I believe that currently, some sort of voluntary service is rewarded as a credit in some, if not all, Ontario high schools.
Back in the early sixties, high school students in Ontario had to goose step in military uniforms for grades.
I think that military training may simply make the thugs currently in school better at using their knives and guns.
What about physical activities? School kids get about 1/5th the "gym" time I used to get in high school. No wonder the obesity rate has gone through the roof, the Type II diabetic rate has risen to the where it is predicted that 1 out of 2 will develop the disease in Canada. Just yesterday, a report stated that many 10 year olds have arterial plaque buildup of what was found in 40 year olds forty years ago.
The more I think about it, the more I realize how far downhill behavioural tendencies have slid in Canada over the last 40 years. It will take at least another40 years to go back to some state of "normalcy".

Looks like you said "God you're a moron" which to me means "God you are a moron" which still means you are calling God a moron.

Why would you do that? At least you could wait until Sunday and at church where you can have this sort of frank discussion with him in person.

So do you think everyone should be forced to volunteer some time? How about we force everyone to work, how about that?
