A photo of a Muslim woman wearing full Islamic dress and holding up a bra as she sorts laundry is stirring controversy in Kamloops, B.C., and the Saudi Arabian Embassy is now involved.

The photo, taken by Thompson Rivers University fine arts student Sooraya Graham, features one of Graham's friends wearing a niqab, a veil covering the face, and an abaya, a full-body cloak.

The picture was a class assignment and was originally displayed with other student photos in mid-March, until some students complained and a staff member tore it down a week later.....Christopher Seguin, the vice president of advancement at Thompson River University, said the art work was removed by a staff member who was acting on their own, and not in an official capacity........."The university is committed to honouring artistic expression and on a campus with many international stakeholders it is important that we balance cultural sensitivity with freedom of speech, and we value the conversations that this piece of art and all our others inspire," said Seguin.

Saudi rep says photographer 'irresponsible'

But the Saudi Education Centre in Kamloops, which is funded by the Saudi Arabian government and provides support to Saudi students and their families, is taking issue with the photo.

"The artist didn't approach the artwork let's say in a very professional way that can state and can clarify the information and clarify the idea behind the picture," said centre president Trad Bahabri.

Bahabri said he thinks text explaining the photo's meaning is needed.

"I'm pretty sure many people misinterpret and many people misunderstand it. I can guarantee that," he said.

Canadians should tell bar bar bar Bahabri to shut his fucking hole, and the staff member at the school should get a frozen boot to the crotch.

Can't see how that could be controversial. Apparently others can.

"Bahabri said he thinks text explaining the photo's meaning is needed."

Obviously he knows shit about art. No artist worth their salt never explains their work, defeats the whole purpose. Rule number one when it comes to art.

Is Ms. Graham's friend really a Muslim or not? If not, it is uncalled for, and if so, she should have known better than that.

I doubt we (Catholics) would accept it if nuns would be portrayed in that kind of manner by Muslims in Saudi Arabia or something.

Seems pretty self explanatory. It doesn't say a woman dressed as a muslim

Then the Muslims complaining should seek it within their own religion and ban her from the mosque or something.

I don't necessarily believe that what is said there is true tho.

I've seen porn movies with women dressed as nuns... I doubt if I'd be offended if they were produced in Saudi Arabia... or if the "actress" was Arab.

You should see how the Stanford University marching band portrays nuns. This picture is amazingly tame in comparison.

But that's "one of their own", if you get what I mean.
"We" wouldn't accept Muslims in Saudi Arabia putting a nun (or someone posing as a nun) in a garter belt and say "it's art".
If it was a true nun, "we" would slap the nun on the fingers.

You haven't met a lot of Protestants have you? And that's comparing apples to oranges. There is absolutely zero satire involved in the photograph. The photographer message was underneath the tarp all women are the same.

This was a depiction of someone doing a very mundane task, that people do everyday, everywhere. The photographer's message was, underneath the tarp all women are the same.

I get the message. But when you try to stir controversy, you will get it. They got it. Accept it.

Fuck Saudi Arabia. What have they done for us, anyways? And I don't mean helping the oil companies screw us, either.
