It's a disgrace the way some people and some businesses don't care about the Country they live in. I'm talking about the condition of the Canadian flag that some people fly. Dirty, torn and parts missing. It's disrespectful.

My rant right now is against Poulin's Pest Control in Winnipeg. They have a flag on their roof that is in a pathetic condition. See this picture...

When contacted about the flag, I got the idea they don't care. Don Poulin's assistant laughed it off thinking it's no big deal to disrespect Canada. She pretty much said they will get around to it when they do.

Companies should be held accountable when they fly flags in that condition. If you don't want to or don't feel like taking care of it, don't put one up.

that is pretty bad.. if they cant buy a decent one, they should just take it down.

oh yeah, NEVER talk to an assistant or secretary about such things, only the boss..

That flag is a disgrace and should be replaced.

I'm pretty sure you can call the RCMP, and they will do something about it. There are laws regarding the treatment of the flag, and the RCMP are people who don't put up with that crap.

A few years ago, I dropped into my favourite watering hole for a couple liquid libations. I noticed the Canadian Flag on the MV Sampson V floating museum was looking a wee bit tattered. One cellphone call to the New West. city hall, and the flag was being replaced....within the hour!

I don't think those are actual laws. I believe that is just suggested etiquette from Heritage Canada.

Correct. There is no 'law' WRT treatment of the flag. But a finger wagging by people protecting that flag goes a long way.

Too me, it is simply a disrespect for the neighborhood but pest controllers have an expert eye for holes not the highs.

sandorski @ Thu May 01, 2008 4:06 pm

Respect it, but I hope we don't adopt an Idolatrous view of the Flag like our Southern neighbour. The principles that the Flag represents is what are important, not the Flag itself.

A couple people have called and a couple have emailed. They should have the message now. Let's just leave them alone for a day or two and see what happens.
I will update this with news on if the flag gets taken down.

Not that! It's coloured cloth, only meaning it has is what it represents. Those principles is what defines the Nation, not the coloured cloth.

I have to agree with this. It is disrespectful and there is no need for it. People could even wash the flags, they don't need to buy a new one.
