Australia to spend $270b building larger military to prepare for 'poorer, more dangerous' world and rise of China

$1:
Scott Morrison has unveiled a more aggressive defence strategy aimed at countering the rise of China, while warning that Australia faces regional challenges on a scale not seen since World War II.

Australia will build a larger military that is focused on its immediate backyard, including new long-range anti-ship missiles, signalling a major shift in the nation's defence strategy.

"We have not seen the conflation of global economic and strategic uncertainty now being experienced here in Australia in our region since the existential threat we faced when the global and regional order collapsed in the 1930s and 1940s," the Prime Minister warned.

Mr Morrison also announced a commitment to spend $270 billion over the next decade on defence capabilities, including more potent strike weapons, cyber capabilities and a high-tech underwater surveillance system.

I wish Canada would take its security as seriously as Australia does.

Smart move.

They are physically more threatened by China. Which is odd, because all the powerful nations, China was never one to colonize another country. Portugal, England, Belgium . . . all expanded beyond their borders.

Now China wants in.

Canada will never take our defense seriously. Why should we, we have America next door.

One of these days you folks will wake up to some sort of US flag flying over your country and at this rate it might be a communist US flag.

Good on the Aussies. But at the same time I wonder just how necessary it is. China is expanding its influence not by way its army or navy, but with its economic clout. ASM‘s can’t combat China throwing its money around.

With the full-scale withdrawal of the US from any sort of global leadership the Australians might not have a choice in the matter. It could be the beginning of a new allied organization with the Aussies, South Koreans, and Japan taking up responsibilities that the US has abandoned. Maybe even India will feel the pressure to starting linking arms with others if their new disputes and clashes with China continue.

Is the US supposed to be the world's protector when people like yourself will endlessly shit on us for doing so? And here you are shitting on us because we're not out protecting every country that refuses to adequately protect itself...like Canada, home of the $4bn cargo ship.

herbie @ Fri Jul 10, 2020 2:03 pm

That's because it's only the USA that we have to 'protect' ourselves from. No one else can actually invade us. And we just blew $340 billion in 4 months on Covid, so we can obviously blow that as quickly living next to the biggest arms seller in the world if we wanted to.
The USA is still so politically naive they can't tell Finland from Stalin's USSR, nationalist uprisings from communist threats or threats to US business from threats to US sovereignty.*
We're NOT Australia. They already went through it with Japan next door, lived with asshole Indonesia and now China. Good idea if they make nice with India.

*which is why things get rocky at times.

That global leadership is what enabled the US to win the Cold War - because it enabled your country the unfettered ability to ship its trade goods across the planet and grow your economy to the point where the Soviets couldn't keep up militarily even by spending 25% of their GDP.

The problem now is that the Commies are back at the gates and this time around, you're funding their economy and military by buying up every damned thing they will sell you, and your President constantly tells the world how great Xi Jinping is.

Yes, the rest of of the world, including Canada, needs to step up, but your country is abdicating the role that made it the dominant force for good on the planet over the past 70 years. If you want your country to go the way of Great Britain or Spain, that's your choice I suppose. I know I wouldn't want to see my country decline to second rate status...

You can't have an economy if your country gets bombed back to the stone age.

Good on Australia. I am having more and more respect for the Aussies as of late, especially after being able to watch NRL rugby in the early mornings to get my sports fix.

The Aussies don't take no shit, and I think that is awesome.

It let everyone grow, including Russia, China, and Iran.
And no one wanted to help pay for it, everyone just took the free joy ride.
BTW, you should look around and figure out the US % of GDP from int'l trade
is about the lowest of all developed countries.

While the US has been paying for it, they benefit the least frpm it.

Opps, too late. Maybe we could have stopped the free security ride and coughed up some
dough, oh say.. back in the 60's.

The US won't decline by their withdrawal.

If anything, it will make them even stronger.

Far better than being 95 like you.
It is a shame to watch how decades of leaded gas rots out brains... and wits.
