Will this be the straw that breaks NATO's back?

Israel in NATO is a no-no.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization means just that, countries in the North Atlantic, which Israel isnt. As for Iran, its obvious that if they even threaten another country so many people will be on their asses it wont even be funny. Iran knows that, theyre not going to do anything. Israel and Palestine need to settle thier problems, then maybe some sort of agreement to help each other. But a big no-no for them in NATO.

Bad enough having Turkey and Greece in NATO, but Israel in NATO along with Turkey...man would shit hit the fan.

FuBaR @ Mon Mar 28, 2005 6:49 pm

Theres just too much religous conflict in that area, the true goals of NATO would be overshadowed and that cant happen.

I think Israel is the cause of a lot of the troubles in the middle east today and even effects things like 9-11

After ww2 when the britan and the staes carved Israel out of Palestine, they saw them as invaders, which they were really. And they still think this today, the hatred has been growing for 50 years.

I don't think they should be part of NATO. But the past is done, its unrealistic to get rid of Israel now, but the violence has to stop. Maybe NATO can help with that? i dunno

israel would just try to dominate nato like they do everything else!let iran and israel duke it out!everybody else keep your noses out of it!

FuBaR @ Mon Mar 28, 2005 8:03 pm

Alright,
#1-Theyre called "capitals". Try it once and a while.
#2-The "space bar" is the longest one out there, try using it after a punctuation.
#3-Do you even know what you're talking about? Israel dominate NATO like they do everything else? What does Israel dominate? Let Iran and Israel duke it out? And keep our noses out of it.
Its incompetence like yours that really makes a good debate turn south. Are you 10 years old? Have you been out in the real world in the past 5 years? Nuclear weapons are bad.

Israel in Nato, I doubt it. since when did anybody take "The Globalist" as a relevant news source?

Silly topic, move on.

TheAnalyzer @ Mon Mar 28, 2005 11:18 pm

First, Israel and Palestine have to settle down peace between them.
I don't think that the "world" will accept Israel in NATO without Palestine.
That could be a factor of war; however accepting the two of them in NATO could help fixing the peace(once settle) between the two nations.

Is NATO a world organisation or only a Atlantic one? If you accept middle east countries, you'll have to accept other non-atlantic countries. And if Japan ask for acceptation?
And if NORAD defends the world airspace? Sounds silly to me...

And you posted why then? About Globalist I don't see the idea of following stories that follow a global theme as 'silly', I see ignorance as silly. I don't believe NATO is going to accept Israel tomorrow by any stretch but I can definitely see Israel petitioning for the purposes of legitimacy. Why wouldn't they try to join as an endorsement by other democratic nations it only strengthens their hand?

EyeBrock @ Mon Mar 28, 2005 11:38 pm

Ok Scape, why has no other major news org carried this story? Because it doesn't exist, therefore it is silly. As somebody who spent 10 years in a NATO military I feel I have the right to comment on this topics silliness. Spend a few days in the field and you’ll know why I made a post. Do you actually think Israel would ever join NATO? Have they ever even tried to join? They are in the Eurovision song contest but that’s about it. Democracy aside, NATO will never ask Israel to join. Why the hell would it? The NATO Charter says an attack on a NATO nation is an attack on NATO. Israel is under constant threat and I can’t see the French (NATO) or the Germans (NATO) rushing to their aid. The Israeli’s have the US , why would they need NATO?

All very silly!

I agree with every one of your points but this is not something that would be asked for out of the cold now would it? You know how governments work, they launch trial balloons 1st and being accepted into NATO would be a boon for whatever government was running Israel at the time. Now the chances of Turkish troops going to the aid of the Israelis to protect them from stone throwing Palestinians is laughable but the political capitol created by joining for Israel would be a real deal for them. Israel has always been looking for legitimacy. I know the chances of them being accepted are minimal but the chances of them petitioning are not and it would force serious discussions by member nations on what it takes to become a member and that would be a healthy debate for NATO in keeping it a relevant world body don't you think?

EyeBrock @ Mon Mar 28, 2005 11:50 pm

Ok, I admit, I was being dismissive!

Scape @ Mon Mar 28, 2005 11:51 pm

No worries. But what do you think?
