Ironic, how the British around the time of the defeat of the French in new france (Quebec today), mandated freedom of religion & freedom of education into their laws. Therefore, the culture of the defeated was not only allowed to thrive, it was almost guaranteed to thrive.
Interesting what our prime minister said a year-and-a-half ago, publically stating how he wished France had won the war in Quebec, so that today, both Canada and the U.S. would be french. Guess THAT would have saved a lot of trouble, eh johnny? No need to fool around with freedom of education or religion, the French had NO such policies at the time, just the opposite!
On a sadder note: A British nobleman, Dorchester was his name, was a great admirer of the French culture & people. Throughout his life he was very benevolet towards the people of Quebec, ensuring schools, libraries, and other pillars of a society be built, often at great personal cost to himself. A wide, gracefull boulevard in Montreal was named in his honor. But don't try to find Dorchester boulevard on the map today. Uh Uh. The separatists have renamed Dorchester boulevard Boul. Rene Levesque! I guess "dorchester" is too english sounding for them. Anybody remember what that prick Levesque did for this country?
Forty years of this has gone on. Imagine, Lucien Bouchard (another fine "Canadian"), quit his party because of what he consided racist & hatefull philosophies among his colleagues. Takes one to know one, I guess!
