Yup. Wooing girls to get married off at 13 is nothing new in the southern sates or in a lot of Muslim countries. The advent of women's rights has more or less put the brakes on that in North America but this was business as usual just a generation ago. Moore's main sin, as far as the thumpers were concerned, was not wooing young teens but engaging in sexual activity outside of wedlock.

Actually you are right. In the foothills of Virginia where my grandmother lives at at that time girls you could get married at 16. The laws were changed since then.
