Any advice where to live in/near Toronto?
I am moving to Toronto at the end of April!
Is there any good advice about what neighbourhoods to avoid and the good ones to live in? I have to find an apartment or maybe a house to rent and I get a $1,000 allowance from my firm for rent and bills so I have to make it stretch.
Toronto is overall a well-rounded city, but there are areas that are not really that safe. They include ... a) Jane & Finch Area b) St. Jamestown c) Regent Park & Moss Park d) Cabbagetown (after dark) e) Kipling & Albion area f) Neilson & Finch g) Malvern area. If you want to avoid drug dealers, avoid the following places at night... a) Yonge Street b) Dundas & Jarvis c) Any place in downtown East of Church Street

In the east end, anywhere along Huntingwood(agincourt) is nice if you don't mind the ever expanding chinese community. West end, Richview. Central, anywhere close to Young, north of Eglington(Uptown). However, like any city, the nicer the area, the higher the rent. St.Clair has a huge italian community some nice homes. East york has an Irish community (a little run down). Along the danforth is a big greek community, and west college and west dundas is where a lot of Portugese live.
This site gives a good summary of some of the different districts:

I live in Malvern, do not come here if you value you life.

spadina is where a lot of Portugese live.
I used to live in Spadina near a bar called Grossmans (great blues, wonder if it is still there?) and the Portugese bought all the houses from the Jews and painted them bright pink and and purple and parked cars on lawn without tires. They still do that?
Spa spa spa spadina bus.

I don't know about grossman's, but yes, portugal village is probably the most colourful part of the city, brightly painted houses and very good food there. I don't know about the cars either but not much has changed there, old buildings, friendly people. Stay away during world cup though, they go bananas. Kennsington market is a big attraction there if you are looking for a deal on anything used or just some good food.

What is the major intersection closest to where you will be working?
Toronto and area is bigger than Greater London England in terms of area.
As a heads up, $1000 may not cover your rent depending on where you want to live or what lifestyle you choose to live.
My sister worked in downtown Toronto but lived in downtown Hamilton and took the GO Train in for work. Her apartment in Hamilton was twice the size for less money(in a newer building with better security) than the apartment she originally had in Toronto.

The west end of Toronto (Etobicoke) has some of the nicest neighbourhoods. i grew up here... We have great schools, great shopping, great dining and its close enough to downtown but far enough away so that you do not feel too close to everyone.
However, $1000 is not going to cut it out here. Rent alone will start at about that much (maybe).
