I don't know if smokers realise how bad they really smell either. I worked with one nicaddict, while teaching, and you could smell that he'd been in the classroom 10 minutes after the fact. My wife's father was a chain smoker and she commented, years later, on how the smell prevades everything, including all her family's clothes. "God, did we smell like that when we went to school?" He's been dead for two years, but still the smell lingers in the house. No amount of air freshener, mouthwash or cologne can cover up the smell completely.
