Patriots do not wear the US flag. A$$holes do.

Yes they do...it's the modern patriotic thing to do.

Given that Australia is said by many to be "the 51st state of America", blame us for their doing it if you like.

Sorry chum, I don't go for trendy things when it comes to how I treat the US flag.

More of a worry is this;

http://www.americanpatrol.com/CCIR/MolinaObledoCCIR.html

On February 15, 1998, the U.S. and Mexican soccer teams met at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The crowd was overwhelmingly pro Mexican even though most lived in this country.
They booed during the National Anthem and U.S. flags were held upside down.
As the match progressed, supporters of the U.S. team were insulted, pelted with projectiles, punched and spat upon.
Beer and trash were thrown at the U.S. players before and after the match.
The coach of the U.S. team, Steve Sampson said, "This was the most painful experience I have ever had in this profession."

the only ones who say that are a handful of Australians.

Those who refer to their countries as "the 51st state" are usually those on the left side of the spectrum who are extremely paranoid regarding American influence.

I don't think it's a far stretch to say that we are part of a group of countries, companies, and interests called "the West", and that "the West" almost completely revolves around the United States as an extention.

Formally part of the United States however? No... Such formalities are virtually pointless. Just open the borders up further.

We're tendrils, that's all.

Thanks for backing me up! Knew I could count on you! :D

Canada has gotta be the 51st, Australia is probably 56th or so, just under South Korea

Bullshit!! If anything the US could just maybe make it as Canada's 11th province or 4th territory.....if they try really, really hard.....and say please and thank you.

More than a handful.

It would never work as a formal arrangement though.
Half the downunder people would soon find themselves in a US prison. :)

I don't think it's paranoia or even specifically suggests paranoia.

We are, possibly permanently, attached to our large ally by the hip, and we're not alone.

Whether that's bad, good, anti-American, or anti-Western, depends on the speaker.

You said statehood was a mere formality, meaning that you consider Canada to be a defacto state of the union.

That's much different from saying "we're attached at the hip". Of course we're attached at the hip, but it doesn't make us a puppet state.

Canada has a slightly different relationship with the US than Cuba had with Russia. We have a shared history, common language, religion(amongst the anglophone population) and culture.
