Not the dog or the Roman god of hell! The planet!

You brought up a good point there Shep. There is alot of debate about exactly how many planetes there are in our solar system. Is it 8, 9, 10, 20, 50, or more? Pluto is thought to be merely the largest object in it's region of space. It is very different from the rest of the planets. That is what part of this mission is about, to decide if Pluto should be a planet and if it is, what else is out there that should be included

Can somebody tell me why the world is wasting uncalculable $$$$ on 'space exploration'??? we can't even manage the world we already have. What the hell possible difference will it make to our lives whether 'water exists' on mars or not??? [boff]

It's human nature to want to explore and I hope there is water on mars.
It will make terraforming much easier.

That's all 'well&fine'! You want to 'explore' then go for it! But don't use my money to do it! If you find water on Mars, 'bottle it and sell it'! If I want some I'll buy it! If 'space exploration' ( not communication satellites etc.) is such a good investment of 'public funds', then how have we benefited by learning that the moon isn't made of green cheese?!( personally, when I find green cheese in my 'fridge, it goes into the garbage!) All we have done so far is leave billions of $$ in equipment scattered around with nothing to show for it!
So I'll pose my question again. Why do we NEED to know what the hell is 'out there'. We can't control any of it anyway and we're doing a 'piss-poor' job of looking after this world! Should'nt we be focusing on what we already have?

Space: the final frontier.
These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilisations; to boldly go where no man has gone before.

S, in short, YOUR answer is 'there is absolutely no justification for wasting the money rather than using it to improve the world we already have! Such as 'crime has run rampant because there is no money available to hire for police officers, people are starving to death because there is no money for lifes NECESSITIES, there is no money to build hospitals and improve our medical system, and every community in Canada has a food bank etc. etc. etc. But we really need to know more about Jupiter and Mars and the Moon!

Man you need to chill out a bit but yeah I'll give you a straight answer.

You are correct, there is no NEED to go to space. There is only a WANT.
Just like there was no NEED for Columbus to sail across the Atlantic, only a Want.

Ok so by your reasoning Yogi we should also put the boot to big budget movies. LOTR cost more to make than one of the recent Mars missions did. Do you think that we would have evolved as a civilization if we did no pure research projects? Billions have been spent on pure research in the last decades and the value of the information gleaned from this data will never truely be known, only that it has had an immense impact on the world as we know. The Apollo missions of the 60s and 70s are STILL affecting us to this day. From the mundane to the extrodinary.
When we stop looking over the horizon to wonder what is there and why it is there then we might as well pack it in and commit societal suicide, because we will be worth nothing and will have totally stagnated.

Waste WASTE.......Hayzeus man have you ever really looked into the benefits space research has given man from the spin offs.
The medical benefits alone more than justify space exploration.

Warp Factor

Just one web site there, take a look at all the others and then tone down your communistic mantra.

NO, by my reasoning ALL of the aforementioned SHOULD be allowed to go ahead.I,m 'pissed' about MY money being used for useless endeavors much in the same way I would be if my tax dollars were being spent on'Hollywood productions' (don't get me started on cbc)I don't care how much 'private finance' wants to spend on their persuits.Much the same as a movie, if the 'space cowboys' come up with something that I want then tell me the price and let ME decide if I want to spend money on it. Explore all you want. Good luck. I hope you find untold riches. But do it on YOUR dime!

Cuz I'm not a 'trekkie', I'm bitter! I'm not a Hare Krishna either, so I must be an athiest!!
I'm just an ordinary guy, working his ass off in the highest taxed country in the G-7 who wants to see HIS tax dollars being spent on what he perceives to be practical! As I stated earlier, explore to your hearts content, but pay for it with private funds and IF you come up with something worthwhile, 'put it in a bottle'and sell it to those who WANT it!

Actually I am the atheist here......... :?

And which of your tax dollars were spent on the Pluto mission? We work with NASA not fund it.
