Housing would be problematic because it costs an arm and a leg, although she could land an admin position that pays good coin

That's one of the things you really have to think about...
Housing, if available, is really expensive.
Gotta have all the ducks in a row before you make that move. At least, I do.
If I were alone, YOLO! (Thanks Drake )
But I'm not.

The costs in Ft. Mac are relative. Avg salary is $180,000 per annum.

I have a hard time believing that when I see this:
$1:
FULL-TIME live-in caregiver in Fort McMurray to take care of a 22 month old. $10.11 and hour, 44 hour/week. Have a caregiver course and can speak English. A first aid certificate and police clearance is a must. Duties: giving baby bath, food preparation, organize activities such as games and perform light housekeeping. Email resume to hoddercaregiver@ outlook.com

You guys make it sound that if you just send them your resume, you have a job as long as you are willing. It doesn't really work that way

It's always worked that way for me.

A $20/hr job doesn't really cut it when your rent is $3000/mo...

That's average rent in Fort Mac (or so I found when I was looking for rentals. There were 16 available. That's not much).
1 bedroom: $1895. $20/hr job still does not cut that.

There are many other places to live besides Fort Mac. Other drivers are in high demand, like delivery truck, milk pickup, and long haul. Rent is cheaper, and pay is about the same.

See here's the thing.

People want to argue that raising the minimum wage would just increase inflation but that's only the case if more money enters into the economy. If no new money is printed there is no inflation.

There is no good reason why employee wages can't be raised at some of the expense of CEO and Board member multi million dollar premium bonuses. The reality is that isn't likely to happen without a shift in business thinking.

When we stop investing in companies and CEOs with the message of "just make the stock go up at all costs" CEOs will stop sinking companies with plans to post one or two good quarters before the whole ship sinks.

If you want higher wages for low end employees then either get involved in politics and become a voice for change or watch where you shop and invest. Not a damn thing else any of us can do about it.
