Anyway, I have a pretty mixed bag of folk with 5 indians, 2 blacks and the rest whites but all are Christian or secular. The other day I hired my first Muslim into a supervisory role as he was the best candidate for the job and many on my staff expressed their concerns privately amongst one another.
Why was this mentioned then ? Now you are in a grey area considering most Muslim countries have no seperation between church and state. In any case, religious and racial equality are Canadian values that are protected for all citizens. Complying with the laws of the country certainly doesn't deserve any special gratitude as it is something we should expect of all Canadians.

wow, i guess he has such strong feelings because as we all know, edmonton is ground zero for terrorist activity. osama's two step plan to destroy the west was 1. wtc 2. edmonton. life as we know it would....go on exactly as it always has LOL

You don't get it on many counts.
1. As an employer I can decide to hire whomever I want for whatever reason I want regardless of the laws. It may be illegal to tell a guy I won't hire him because he looks gay but it is not illegal to bin his resume because I think he is and I don't feel I'll be able to work along side him(or at least try and convict me for it).
2. In Alberta you can terminate employment within the first 90 days without reason or compensation and I do it all the time.
3. As a business man the happiness of my staff is paramount to the businesses success. If someone reeks of BO and the employees complain I get the guy to shower or I fire him. If one Muslim will disrupt my operations too seriously it is better to get rid of him then everyone else.
You can bleat about the laws all you want but they mean nothing because only the most out of touch employer sacks anyone and explains it due to religion, creed, race, etc.

Honesty AND integrity! Very hard to find these days. You are to be commended for your decision GFPB.
Undoubtedly, you have saved a lot of grief 'down the road' as it is just a matter of fact that more immigrants will be entering the workforce in the forseeable future.
And as you stated, 'The most qualified person got the job'. As long as he isn't espousing his religious beliefs in the workplace, it should be of absolutely no concern to anyone. Kudos to you!
Kudos to you, too.

Don't laugh too much. It was a big surprise to a lot of people when it was determined that the principle planning for the 9/11 attacks was done in Bangor, Maine. New York City was the target, but it was backwater Bangor that was the base of operations.
Considering al Qaeda models success after success it would be no surprise to me at all if Edmonton or even Thunder Bay were the centre of operations for an attack on Ottawa or etc.

You've just compared religion to BO. Frankly that's my opinion too, leave that s**t at home. I have a hard enough time with the people who want to mix religion and politics so you can imagine my opinion on mixing business and politics. However, what happens when you look at a resume and it's another Muslim? I would hazard a guess that if push came to shove that 'x' in the wrong slot on the religion category may end up costing a job. Perhaps it's time to nix the whole thing and adopt a don't ask and I don't give a s**t policy when it comes to religion at work. Only way to be fair and if there are those in the workplace that they think their religion should be imposed on others in the workplace perhaps they should find a nice country that thinks like that, for example Iran.

I definitely approve of your decision to fire the guy, GFPB. And unlike Lily, I don't think you can be blamed for favoring peace in the workplace over complete fairness to all potential employees - that's the kind of dilemma you simply can't find a perfect solution to. You deserve lots of credit for your attitude.
I don't have a category for religion and if I did and unless it was used to deny Christians employment I know the liberal crowd would be all over me.
fire_i @ Wed May 30, 2007 7:42 pm
Now don't bring flame into your own thread.
Anyway you can be sure that if you deny Christians employment, I'll be there to show at least one Liberal doesn't see "positive discrimination" kindly.
I remember the first time I heard of positive discrimination back when I was in elementary school. Teacher praised it for about 15 minutes and then my very first reaction was "Basically, positive discrimination is *still* discrimination". Even today I think that's the best thing I could have said.

I'm just still kinda choked at the whole scene. After a couple days now things have calmed down and everybody seems to be looking for a face saving solution but I can't have anybody I know who hates any particular group that much in my employ as I may hire other Muslims down the road (I hear they are like peanuts and you just can't stop at one) and this new guy deserves to work in an environment free from the stress of any animosity or discrimination. I'm sure no fan of the Muslims and I was chastised as being "someone who should understand of all people" but I'll leave my activism for these political forums or my lobbying efforts towards the federal politicians who are letting them in unchecked in droves and allow the ones who are here to stand on merit.
As a side note the guy has not been performing to expectations so I may have to can him anyway but that is a distant thought as it takes a bit more time to perform a full evaluation.
