Its truly amazing, people wanting others to work for peanuts without any rights and just do whatever.
They complain that the unions are making too much money and are making the company no longer profitable because as someone said the employees are getting 300 dollars a day just to come to work.
Well what about the executives that are making 20 times that and then there are all those bonus agreements. The fact is the unions are not making the lions share of the profit benefits, the bosses are. Today we need unions more than ever before and we need governments to step up to the plate and make these companies conform to labour law and especially environmental laws.
It is said there is no free lunch, and that should enclude the business community.
I am not in a union in fact I have my own small business but I don't share the view that the economic problems of the world are the unions fault far from it.
There are far more company managers and owners going to jail for stealing from their companies and this is running rampant throught the business world. Every time one of these officials gets caught with their fingers in the cookie jar, its always they made a mistake. Ya right, and the union is to blame for these multi million dollar paydays and bonuses, and stock options and ripoffs. The employers and have been ripping off the workers for years and now the the worker shortage all those chickens are comng home to roost, the unions should be asking for catch up for the last two decades.

Let's face it, Unions can be necessary. It's pretty easy for a company's management and bean counters to play cut-throat with the average worker if they truly don't care. But a union gives the whole workforce some power and weight.
To blame one entity is to be truly ignorant. A union has it's place and it has it's pros and cons. Like any government. Or gender.
I am a union man and am happy about it. I am a hard worker and DO have a few slothlike workmates. But them's the breaks eh?
I hate striking (we went thru a 8 monther in '98) but I want a fair deal for my time. Just like the rest of us.

unionguy unionguy:
the arguemnt for union or non-union will never die, we will find out in the end. Merit shops will disapoint those that are part of them.
I will always be union because of the benifits, wages and knowing that i will just have to worry about the work I do and my wages will taken care of.
I understand those that have been apart of a union that has taken them for a ride, but in this day there are more unions that are working to improve the relationship between managment and the worker with long term relationships in mind.
You may argue that the unions are building their pensions but the union that I belong to along with many others have accountability built in now.

As for Marine Pipe Line I looked at the contract and yeas there may have been some crazy shit written but what I did notice is there was two groups of signatures on the contract union and MANAGEWMENT. This is true for all union contracts.
Do not blame unions because of weak management!!!!!!
I dont know anyone who's had a problem with merit benefits. Excavator operators make about $32.00/hr plus truck and sub on top of that on the pipeline, the one reason Clac is there is because their an alternative to the unions that ran the pipeline industry into the ground and they actually will listen to management. They were called a rat union for the longest time,if youve been union long enough you will know what that is.

With the IUOE I made around $80,000.I make 6 figures with Clac and thats not even pipeline.

We'll see how good my union is in the near future. My company is talking about eliminating nine jobs. I'm already on the call list, which means I only work when someone calls in sick or goes on vacation. If I have to move nine positions down I must as well look for a new job. If I do I'm going to be asking the union for all my dues back.

When I was in BC there was 2 guys who didnt sign the union paper which saw part of their dues go into the internationals pension fund.To this day the union has been publishing their names in their local rag trying to get other members to get them to sign. The union continually threatens them with the line that they wont be eligible to collect their pensions even though the money is still deducted from their dues. They should be retiring in a year or so,should be interesting to see what happens.

Thats whats called looking after the brothers and sisters(the union ones).

PG has gone from being OK to seriously in trouble in the last two months. However I think this is needed, for too long we have relied on forestry and the Americans . Maybe this will finally get people thinking about diversifying.

I know the Alberta Nurses UNION ;) won the contract and a senior nurse would get $43 hr. this is 83000 and change .. the cost of living is higher in Alberta with houses in the 400,000 range etc..so it works out.. 70000 is my base. It doesnt include bonus or stats...

tehowe @ Tue Jan 15, 2008 8:16 am

The way I see things, the right of employees to get together to defend their interests is a natural counterbalance to the power of management.

Now, it's worth separating that idea out from all of the statist, legislative BS around the issue. That is probably where the real discussion lies - governments have, in the past, given too much power to both sides of this equation depending on the prevailing culture. However I'd say that the right to bargain as a bloc is a natural one, and is no different than bargaining for a better price fon a ski package because you got a bunch of buddies together.

Both the employees and employers have to keep the viability of the company in mind, so information sharing and working in partnership is key.

I wonder what my sister in-law is doing to make over 100 000 in that field. I think her salary is in the high 90's and I know when they settled their last contract she got over 20 grand in bonuses.

BTW remember no PST and gas is cheaper for your gas guzzling SUV.

The median house price in Calgary was 400 000 in DEC 07 it's a buyers market right now lots of listings people are selling for as much as 10% below list.

Unions are for the most part going the way of the white buffalo. In B.C. where I reside, the only unions with much clout left are the public service unions. The rest are being phased out by the corpocracy. As more and more multi-nationals take over companies like Alcan Aluminum, CNR and the logging sector, more unions will be shut down and marginalized. I expect that within 10 years there will be no unions left of any consequence whatsoever - the sweat shops with 3rd world labor will reign supreme.

Both they the union and Management are in on it together , There ways of thinking is to screw the hard working people ( The innocent ones ) and give the good for nothing lazy a$$ easy jobs , Total corruption . It either your a bad a$$ or your the innocent type that doesn't believe in doing evil , but either case only one type really works and it sure ain't the bad a$$es . I also was a shop steward . I also believe one day whom ever enjoy evil will pay for their crimes . So in the end it always best to be a good hard working person .

You should read my topic "Communism in Alberta" It tells of the rise and fall of the once mighty United Mine Workers of America union.

mtbr.. I got that info from the Alberta nurses union... I suppose with overtime, stats, and shift premiums it could add up.. but I checked with the union and they said they dont know of too many nurses making 6 figures unless its doing 2 jobs or alot of overtime...
