why did so many not bother to vote in ontario election ?
ryan29 @ Thu Oct 11, 2007 5:16 pm
sure the weather wasn't perfect on voting day but that is no excuse for the turnout we witnessed at the polls .
this is from elections ontario website ,according to them only 52% of voters bothered to vote in this election. so around half didn't even bother to vote in many ridings , meaning if they had voted we could of had a vey different outcome .
Voter Turnout
Here are the number of eligible electors who have voted so far in this election.
4,421,628
of a possible
8,380,702 (52.8%)
27,680 of 27,679 polls reporting
my question is did some not vote because of polls which predicted a liberal majority and they figured there vote didn't count ? or maybe they felt there local riding was going strongly one way and there was no need to vote ?
or did they not vote because they felt they couldn't support any of the candidates or were maybe uninformed of poltics in general ?
I meant to send in an absentee vote, but lost track of time, the election ended up sneaking up on me.

well it had a fixed date so everyone knew when it was taking place, almost think the fixed date ended up hurting the level of interest and it made it seem like campaign was very long .
think there would of been more interest in election if it had been called suddenly and people weren't bored to death by long and uneventful campaign , the long campaign didn't have too many important issues and gave voters few reasons to pay attention.
I'd say that it represents the satisfaction of the electorate. When things are running 'good enough', people become apathetic.
Well look at what the options were...
1) Dalton "I'll keep my promises THIS time" McGuinty.
2) John "I wanna give every pissant cult their own school system" Tory
3) Howard "I never say anything worth quoting" Hampton
If I still lived in Ontario, I would have stayed away from the polls if I had crap like this to choose from.

Yeah, not quite sure who I'd have voted for anyways, haven't been paying any attention to Ontario politics since I got out here.
Inaction, that schools bullshit, or bandwagoning (the NDP have won my riding every election that I can remember)

well that is possible as the greater toronto area is fairly well off and jobs are plentiful it seems ,but this is not the case everywhere in ontario especially up north or in rural areas.
some areas had reasons to be upset at the government but they either forgot by election day or decided to not blame there local mpp for problems .
not sure maybe some people aren't into politics enough to even bother paying attention or caring who wins or loses .

well some voters did view the choices like this and many went green this election , maybe ontario politics needs to change or get more interesting to increase turnout .

Are said problems the fault of Ontario premier?

This is rational. If A=B=C, why waste your time voting? I'm not saying this is good practice, it's just rational. It's not like anybody was running on an earth-shattering platform. In fact, the biggest issue was an issue you have repeatedly called insignificant.
The people feel complacent; this is represented in the results and voter turnout.
Maybe it's just me but without this site I could go bonkers. Hereabouts, you can't discuss politics. You are either dealing with a bitter partisan or just as bitter an apathy....no apparent middle ground.
An unrepentant LIBRANO just down the road agrees.....in fact we went to the polls together. He can't figure out why I never have a lawn sign but then shrugged when I pointed out the dearth of such in these parts.

If what you're saying is voting for a party simply because it's that party is idiotic, I completely agree.
I selected not to vote in the election because in our riding it was pretty much a done deal even before election day. Meaning the candidate already had a huge margin in advance.
Plus, it's all the same anyways, Conservatives, NPD, Liberals.
They should have a party like these, then the turn out would be much greater
Marijuana Party of Canada
Bloc Pot
Kidding !!!

Sounds like projection from a confirmed partisan hack.

Typical RUEZ - low on substance and high on banality. Shuffle along.
