The way you sound is that if Quebec becomes a country you'll regain your tax dollars(which is true) but have you ever stopped to think that equalization payments stop. A party who holds the majority of the seats controls the judiciary and puts through any legislation it wants. Canada lacks the checks and balances of a true democracy.<br /> <br /> Whoever heard of a party drafting and implementing the very legislation they wrote. That party sets up all commitees reviewing that legislation. You get the picture.<br /> <br /> Canada's Democracy is further watered down because demographics of the Area determines who get's elected. They in turn push their agenda. What we end up having is a parliament that accomplishes very little.<br /> <br /> So please Dr. Caleb don't insult the people of Canada by calling Canada a democracy. It is nothing but a power grab so they can line their political supporters pockets once they gain power. Independent Quebec would have billions, PQ says<br /> <br /> Thursday, May 5, 2005 Updated at 1:49 PM EDT<br /> <br /> Canadian Press<br /> <br /> An independent Quebec would be swimming in cash after taking over federal taxing powers and reducing duplication in government services, says a plan presented Thursday by the Parti Quebecois.<br /> <br /> If the province became sovereign, Quebec would re-create its own version of the recent massive surpluses of the federal government and would have full control over how the money is spent, PQ Leader Bernard Landry said.<br /> <br /> “For most people, the decision to support sovereignty is a combination of the heart and reason,” Mr. Landry told reporters after the plan was unveiled.<br /> <br /> “A sovereign Quebec would be in a much better situation than the province of Quebec.”<br /> <br /> The study, drafted by PQ finance critic Francois Legault, says Quebec would have $1.3-billion in extra money in 2005-06 after taking over its share of federal taxes and spending.
