Why am I having a bit of a problem believing that?

I dunno! Why do you? It's actually true!

So...she's getting a deal that keeps her out of jail, and off the Sex Offender watchlist, and they describe that as "horrible"? It's TYT, so color me not surprised at all, but sheesh.
She broke the law. Period. That's a fucking awesome deal considering she could spend 15 years in prison if the judge wants to throw the book at her.
I still think it's ridiculous she's being punished at all especially since as Khar pointed out earlier many states and Canada have laws that prevent cases like this from escalating to this level.
But yeah I have to agree if they are going to proceed with charges that kind of a deal really isn't a bad thing at all.

Using that logic an American can claim that its ridiculous that they are being punished for bringing a concealed handgun into Canada from Vermont. What the hell! No permits are needed there. People from Germany should be allowed to drive 320km/h in Canada. Its legal where they come from. Muslims should be able to kill their daughters if they embarrass their family while in Canada.
I'm being a smartass on purpose. I too would like to change the laws. I do not like to see young people become felons, and their lives ruined. If this woman would have objected to this law under an age type argument, I might have been on board. Kids will be kids. I have no desire to ruin someone's life over youthful indiscretions. My whole problem with this story is how this woman is claiming anti gay discrimination. I also am not seeing anyone who is openly gay stating that this woman is not being discriminated against. There are several gay members on this forum. What about you? You say you are gay. Have you ever been discriminated against for being gay? Have you ever been bullied? Have you ever been minding your own business when some smartass punks start hassling you for no reason? Ever been assaulted? Ever been taunted? Not allowed to join a club or organization? Refused employment or housing? Not allowed to serve your country, or had to hide who you were if you were? That's anti gay discrimination. The list goes on and on. I don't have to tell you, I'm preaching to the choir. I guess my point is: it would be nice to see some real victims of anti gay discrimination speak out. It would be nice to hear: " she is not being prosecuted for being gay, she is being prosecuted for diddling a 14 year old." That would be nice. So far, I am not hearing that from the gay community.
Know what I mean? When those assholes at the westboro Baptist church show up at a funeral, it would be nice to see some other Baptists show up to counter protest, or preferably kick the shit out of the assholes from the westboro Baptist church. That would be a great highlight reel. Or when some muslim assholes butcher a British soldier to death on the street, it would be good to see some muslims speak out and say: "these people do not represent the muslim faith" I had sympathy for this woman until she tried to play the anti gay card. That's total bullshit! She is being treated the same as any other adult who is knocking boots with a 14 year old would be. The gay community is only hurting their cause by allying themselves with this woman.

They often do, but it doesn't get the same attention as the ones who celebrate the acts.
Other than that nitpick, fantastic post!

Yeah. Doesn't suit the narrative to have Muslim speaking out. Just like you don't see many interviews on Christian groups speaking out against Westboro.
andyt @ Fri May 24, 2013 9:17 am
The Muslims already did speak out about the killing, but it was one line in the story. Gets lost in the lets just shoot them right then and there fervor. But for instance those Via train guys - they were caught because Muslims went to the police. Canadian police have apparently made progress in reaching out to Muslims, building trust. The lets just shoot them and not let any more into the country howling just work against that trust.

Florida has it as well. An 18 year old dating a 16-17 year old won't face any charges, but 14, in Florida, is unacceptable.
Thanos @ Fri May 24, 2013 2:24 pm
I'd like to see the judge set aside any guilty verdict and not tag her with a criminal record, with a severe warning to her of course that she will be prosecuted and punished if she ever does anything like this again. But I imagine in Florida most of the judges need the support of the sturm-und-drang crowd from the local social conservatives so any display of wimpish mercy from the judge will probably cost him/her his job when the next set of elections roll around.

I'd be taking the plea deal if I were her, and signing it in a big hurry before they changed their mind.

First of all you have obviously put some effort in your response so thanks.

I think we agree on far more then we disagree and I think your correct in that playing the "It's only because I'm gay" card is ignorant that she would still face prosecution if she were dating a younger male or if she were a man herself.

What's going on here is bad reporting.
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162- ... port-says/The actual and original story.
I think the herald changed it to get more papers sold. They are in a highly conservative part of the country and outrage sells.
Truth is the younger girls parents probably really didn't like the relationship and went to the cops the moment Hunt turned 18. It's why I posted the 5 year exception rule above.
Somebody turned out to be the fool. First you tried to blame the Calgary Herald/Postmedia when it was actually the Associated Press. Later it turns out they were right from the info on facebook.. CBS and Huffington Post were wrong. page 10.
