bootlegga bootlegga:
Number of civil servants earning over $100,000 has doubled since Conservatives came to power

$1:
In 2006, when the Conservatives first formed government, there were 19,509 federal public servants earning more than $100,000 a year. In 2010, that number spiked to 42,050.

The new data obtained by the Ottawa Citizen shows that the 'fiscally prudent' Harper Conservatives have actually governed over an unprecedented growth in civil servant salaries.

The Treasury Board has defended the increase as an anomaly, stating the number of employees earning more than $100,000 was far higher in 2010 because the government made a number of retroactive payments to unionized workers for collective bargaining.

But according to the Citizen, the documents show none of the previous years going back to 2004, when similar collective agreements were negotiated, saw such a large jump in the number of high-earners.

Gregory Thomas, Federal and Ontario Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, says he believes the increase has to do with the government making payouts to some senior staff as part of a long-overdue reform — putting an end to severance payments that were made even when people quit their jobs voluntarily.

Nevertheless, he suggests what's happening in the civil service isn't happening elsewhere.

"Clearly, taxpayers aren't seeing their pay packets surging over the six-figure mark. That's not the reality on the ground," he told Yahoo! Canada News.

"The committee advising the government on retention and compensation is probably saying the same thing: these days, taxpayers don't need to be sweeten the pot to attract top talent. The security of a federal job, with the existing perks and pensions, is more than enough."

So much for fiscal Conservatives...

Sorry to hear all that. It's disappointing.

Oh well, Stephen's kept things on on a relatively even keel up till now. I say that, because I've been watching what's been happening in America.

No way to get around it though. I guess he's starting to cross over to the dark side. Inevitable I guess. Government corrupts. Thanks for hanging in there as long as you did Steve, but it's time for you to go.

I have to admit to being very disappointed in Harper. I said in another thread and I say again now - minority CPC government and a leadership change.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. How many of these employees were making just under 100k before this? The title of this article sounds wonderful but if many of these employees got a slight raise that just bumped them above the 100k mark it's a hell of a lot less damning. For that matter, what's Harpers involvement with the pay scale of government employees? I imagine there is a system in place that takes care of this rather than a call to the PMO for every raise given.

Granted. I shuld have clarified that there have been several things that the PM/PMO has done that has displeased me with his leadership.

So some of you folks are upset that Harper is friendlier to public employee union members than his predecessors were?

Forgive me if I'm savoring the fact that you folks are criticizing Harper for doing what you usually demand from a Liberal.

Hope you don't mind when this one gets shoved down your throat when a Liberal eventually does the same thing.

Maybe you could let us know how many of the 100k+ crowd cs's are also grovelling brown nosing sycophants to the Harper regime? My take would be 100%. At least under a lib government a couple might actually be productive free thinkers. There will be none of that permitted as long as harper is running Canada into a fascist sinkhole.

Post-concussion syndrome, especially from taking too many slapshots right between the eyes, is a bitch and you have my genuine sympathies. Maybe you should consider upgrading your helmet. I know it's your favourite one and that you've been wearing it non-stop since you were in Grade 4 but it might help you out some. I hear the newer ones that come pre-lined with industrial safety grades of lead and tinfoil are supposed to be really comfortable, so how about you go try one out and let the rest of us know if it's working out better for you, n'est pas?

Here is a little toy - the Ontario public sector salaries for 2011.

http://www.dsc-gc.com/Z_2012_F10_Public ... ON2011.php

You can calculate how much money will be saved if there was a cap to the public salaries in the province.

My question is, how come someone making $900,000/year in 2009 is given a $400,000 raise in 2010 and another $450,000 raise in 2011.

I agree with this. Salareis go up. This would have been big news in 1979.

Lemmy @ Wed Mar 28, 2012 5:31 am

Yup. In Ontario, the "Sunshine List" of provincial employees earning >$100K was first published by Mikey Harris' government in 1995. Adjusting for inflation, that number in 2012 dollars is $139K. So tell me whether there are more civil servants earning >$139K today than the number who earned >$100K in 1995. Otherwise, shuffle on...nothing to see here.

Regina @ Wed Mar 28, 2012 6:13 am

Nothing to see is right. Someone just pumping his own tires.
The sunshine list also has gaping holes in it. Our city employee sunshine list at first glance had a huge increase in the number of employee's making $100K+. When you take out the 30 something firemen who were on the list because of a 7 year settlement in back pay, out list was actually smaller than last year.

It all depends on what spin you give those numbers. I would agree with the above logical comment as well.

Yet this still does not explain why someone is given a $400,000 raise year after year and what type of prodigies all of those $500,000+/year guys must be.

Regina @ Wed Mar 28, 2012 12:37 pm

Spin? [huh]

So you're not begrudging someone making over $100k per year...........just the ones making over $500k per year.
