Excellent post.

Excellent opinions by other members too. I have to agree that the land originally belong to aboriginal communities. It is one of the many arguments I use when arguing with seperatist dictators. They say they have a right to seperate, I believe the only who would have a right to do so would be the aboriginal peoples. I believe attrocities were done in the past. I believe the Europeans should not have invaded the Americas.

Now, we have to move on and live for today. We have been left with values and customs and foreigners must respect that.

wow look at all the replies already... let me make one point. I have no problem with people coming here, can't blame them it is a beautiful country with lots to offer, but do other countries drastically conform to there immigrants as much as we do. Re: head dress issue and daggers for religious reasons? Yes we need immigration as we are now a society that has less and less children, but we seem to be losing our identity in my humble oppinion.

While I was at the special ballot both there was a gentleman who spoke with a very thick accent that clearly wasn't French. He made a scene becuase there was no coffee for him while he waited to vote. Made me think...if it was so great where he was before (ie: having coffee at the voting stations) why come here?**

**hint of sarcasm

Good point in that previous post on aboriginals and their view on Euopeans way back when.

Maple_leaf, looking back through history, even if a land 'originaly' belongs to another people so to speak, if a land even belongs to people, is that people who originaly settled in areas are removed. Etruscans conquered by the Latins (Romans), Saxons and Britons etc. The Aboriginals can claim the land as theirs but it isn't. I am not condoning what others did hundreds of years ago but what is done is done.

The Europeans didn't invade the Americas. They were seeking other lands to colonize and new passages to Asia. They didn't invade it in a sense that they had a clear cut goal to conquer and dominate. If you look at Europe at the dawn of the exploration age, you would note that over population and trade problems would implement colonization to other land areas. I know colonization wasn't the first priority but it soon would be. History is all about moving to other lands, just ask the Romans and the Germanic tribes...I'm sure the Romans appreciated the Germans invading them. Not to sound so cold but I am looking at this in a historians perspective.

Jaime_Souviens @ Fri Jan 06, 2006 7:44 pm

Everyone's invaded everyone. England was invaded by more conquering people than probably any piece of land in Europe. France was invaded by Romans and Goths. Germany was cricrossed by various invading people. Every country of Europe was regularly invaded by conquering 'other' people.

Likewise, the various Indian groups were constantly invading each other. The Iroquois invaded the territory of the Algonquin, et c., et c.

If conquest and resettlement is not a "legitimate" means for acquiring possession of land, then Ontario didn't belong to the Huron, because the Huron had taken it from the Algonquin.

We're all descendants of thugs, theives, claim-jumpers, mis-appropriators, and scoundrels.

Let us all hoist a brew to their fond memory.
