Agreed, the problem is that like the Trumpers/Tea Partiers who took over the Republicans, the far left is trying to do the same thing with the Democrats, so a lot of people think if you're aren't 100% in favour of universal healthcare, UBI, the Green New Deal, etc. like AOC, you're not worthy of being called a liberal.
Calling yourself a liberal doesn't mean you have to agree with everything else that the far left wants.

I quite like Bill Maher. He's insufferably smug. Also, I like comedian-philosophers that are more anarchist, like George Carlin. Bill's very much a protector of institutions, other than region. But the fact that people argue whether he's left or right means to me he's in the right spot.

I still enjoy his show but less than I used to. Some of the anti-woke stuff is OK but he’s becoming a sour, pompous old geezer ranting about young people. During Covid I have noticed him weaselling away from some of his dangerously false anti-vaxxer positions of the past. He’s a great man for straw men, painting anyone who disagrees with him as a complete idiot and he knows bugger all about economics.

Stopped watching him other than sometimes catching his opening 5 minutes and his New Rules ending.
He insists he's a Democrat but does nothing but point out reasons not to be. His vision of "left" is 100% defined by the extreme right point of view.
Critical of all the stupid little issues instead of the big ones, then spends 90% of his show talking about nothing but those little ones.

There’s a limited shelf life for most comedians and Maher’s expiry date must be close. I don’t find him that funny any more although I agree with some of what he says. The audience tries to do what it can to signal how hilarious he is but the lines and gestures are too predictable. He’s always been off the reservation on vaccines, perhaps medicine’s greatest achievement, and Covid pushed him farther out. Just another grumpy old man now. Like me.

Probably apples and oranges. George Carlin was never a one-liner kind of guy like Bill Maher. Bill Burr would be closer to how George Carlin was.

Yet George Carlin was a guest on Maher's shows multiple times, they typically agreed on most of the things they were discussing, and appeared to be good friends with each other. And Bill Burr and Maher also get along pretty good. Burr's only dislike of Maher is that Burr disputes Maher's belief that most Americans are stupid. Maher can't understand that other people not being totally interested in the exact same identical things he obsesses over doesn't make them morons - all it means is that a huge swath of the population doesn't waste their lives on politics or social/cultural foolishness. And Burr called him out on it. Doesn't make them enemies, it just means they disagree on something.
But back to the purpose of this thread. It's amazing to watch at how much the genuine leftists will spin things in a certain direction in order to achieve the pre-determined conclusions they want. Fuckin' dirtiest fighters in the game and, just like the Trumpers, they have absolutely no depth to which they won't sink with their cesspool-dweller tactics. "JK Rowling at it again".....
