I hate to think what shows like that would be like if they were made today - "tonight on a very special episode of Good Times, only a week after coming out as trans JJ is badly injured after she is attacked in the park while working as a prostitute". For all the very severe problems they had in the early & mid 1970's at least they didn't have their entire society & culture taken over by a cult of complete dipshits they way it's been hijacked today. The people who experienced the old kind of freedom from long before the toxic crybullies & their demented agenda completely took everything over were incredibly lucky.

Ya, you may want to ask who was 'free' at that time and who was property. That old freedom is the problem and trying to force it into existence when it was a lie to begin with is self delusional.

Nostalgia is a poison if it makes you question live and let live as a tenant. You know, do on to others as you would have done onto yourself? Seems that isn't fashionable these days.

Back in the day, any movie or tv show that featured black people couldn't be played south of the Mason-Dixon Line because the people didn’t want to see that filth. Hugh Hefner used to have a late night chat show and he got in a lot of shit for featuring a band one episode that was white with a black female singer.

You’re acting like having LGBT people on TV is some affront and not an effort to actually represent the broad tapestry that is humanity. Clutch your pearls harder.

I mentioned Norman Lear earlier. He'd have no chance in hell of putting something like All In The Family on TV today. Maybe on HBO, or some other stream, but definitely not on mainstream TV. And the same too with Seinfeld now. I can think that at least half the Seinfeld episodes wouldn't be approved for broadcast today. Just too "dangerous, non-inclusive, & mean" by the empty & farcical standards that have been imposed by cowardly television executives over the last fifteen years. Shit, if Chuck Lorre went into CBS today with a pilot for something like Two & A Half Men (or even The Big Bang Theory) they'd probably send up a couple of thugs to drag him out of the waiting room and then toss him down the stairwell. It's not that the number of humourless scolds has increased by that many over the last two decades. It's just that corporate culture has become that much more genuinely chickenshit in every way because they're absolutely terrified of the activists going after their advertisers and threatening their primary revenue sources. :|

Just think some guy actually walked into CBS in 1970 and said "Hear me out, it's a comedy set in a Nazi PoW camp, right?"

xerxes @ Thu Aug 10, 2023 2:50 pm

Ever see Life is Beautiful? Same kind of deal. A movie about the holocaust, but they tell jokes in it. From 1997.

Well, Hogan's Heroes was set in a PoW camp, not a death camp. And the use of comedy for that scenario had already been precedented by comedy/drama films like Stalag 13 and even in more straight dramas like The Great Escape. It was a different generation, in that the ones who had actually lived through WW2 were somehow less uptight about it than today's generations are. Even the Jewish people in the entertainment world, all of whom assuredly lost family in the Holocaust, saw nothing but value in portraying Nazis as worthless clownish clods. Today though? Try to do what Mel Brooks did with The Producers? Nein! Verboten!

It's all because previous generations were tougher & more resilient and the new generations are total pussies on every level imaginable. And the entire culture has been re-oriented to serve only the needs of the weaklings, who are doing all of this on purpose because in this twisted new world a collective engaging in performative group cowardice has somehow become one of the most powerful political/social/cultural groupings of the era.

So, yeah, apparently it will be nothing but jokes about expired milk* at 711 going forward. Anything rougher than that is simply intolerable and too upsetting for too many. Now, where's that asteroid when it's become so desperately needed to restore some sanity.....

* apologies in advance to the lactose-intolerant demographic & anyone else offended by the mentioning of milk; there was no deliberate intent to make you turn as pale as milk by, well, using the word "milk"

Elon Musk wanting to say the N word on twitter has about the same moral authority as wanting to bring back Hogan's hero's or All in the Family reruns. It's concern trolling.

I was going to ask you what you meant by "concern trolling" but then I decided to google it. Shit but I'm having a hell of a time keeping up with all these new words and phrases we have nowadays and what they mean and how they're used and when you can use them.

Thanos @ Fri Aug 11, 2023 3:17 pm

I was concerned about the attempted linkage between the works of Norman Lear, and the other actual freedom-loving liberals (now basically an extinct species) who worked in the entertainment business back in the much-less shitty days, and the sort of person who start shouting slurs at people in public (or on Twitter). Then I remember that CKA is now infested with diseased leftist minds and that all sorts of irrational conclusions are par for the course these days. Best to just let these things slide because, just like the ravings of a meth-head on a public transit vehicle, none of it is ever going to make any sense to an unindoctrinated mind.

As per South Park.....

1) sees someone laughing at something on the unapproved list
2) calls them a Nazi for doing so
3) ??????
4) PROFIT (in the form of social media cred)

Whatever. :|

I kind of get what you're saying, but there was a film version of the Producers in 2005, and Tropic Thunder pushed a lot of buttons a few years later. Dave Chapelle has done it several times in the past few years with his comedy specials.

I don't think PC culture has taken over everything, and if someone like Tom Cruise wanted to make Tropic Thunder 2, it would get made. The Gen Alpha/Z crowd might not like it, but lots of old fogies would go see it and it'd do just fine. There are people who are uncancelable and if they wanted to make something, they would.

The real reason a lot of pushy/edgey/offensive stuff doesn't get made is because the biggest crowd for movies (in the theatre anyways) is the 16 - 30 crowd, and there is no profit in making a movie that most of them won't go see. Even films like Spoiler Alert, whic was targeted at the LGBTQ crowd, fail miserably at the box office, making companies leery of funding similar projects.

Just look at the big films this summer, they are all generally inoffensive films with either lots of actions and explosions or singing and dancing aimed at creating nostalgia. Granted, I haven't seen Oppenheimer or Barbie, but I did watch Transformers (ok but formulaic), Indiana Jones (fun but immemorable) and Mission Impossible (much better than I expected TBH). Personally, Oppenheimer or Barbie are both streaming films, not ones I'd watch in the theatre for $30 (ticket and a popcorn) - for that, I really only see SFX heavy films that my TV at home would have troubles replicating.

Overall, Hollywood likes to play it safe, not PC. They want to make as much money as they can and try to walk the line between right wing boycotts and woke movies, so as to get as may eyeballs as possible to see thier movies.

You can, with the context that the CEO have their bonuses dwarf the amount that the writers are asking for.

Context matters. No one is cheering on Bob Iger here but it sure seems he is getting away with theft from his workers.
