 We may need an emergency session of parliament to deal with this heinous act:

Language commissioner investigates Cherry

What is this country coming to? It is making a mockery of itself. Ridiculous. Embarassing. Downright stupid.

I'm just as Canadian as you bro. Just because I'm from Quebec, doesn't mean I need to be treated like crap from Don Cherry on national television. BTW, you seem to be always disgusted with Canada as a whole. Why are you here anyways? You hate the weather, the government, the money, the languages, etc. I'm sure if you move down south, the Republicans could surely use another vote. Good luck to ya.

For that matter, why is Don Cherry still in Canada? He's a national embarrassment and hates everything Canadian, except for hockey. He makes up for that by hating a good portion of the hockey players though.

He should be investigated. After that we should deport him.

Funny, I don't ever remember complaining about the weather, the money, or the langauges. I have nothing against French. I do, however, have a problem with the wasteful and unneccessary promotion of it without question or sound judgement.

I am here is because it is my right to be, just as it is my right to complain, if I so choose, without having some self-righteous person such as yourself telling me to leave. Get your head out of RB's arse and stop trying to be like him.

Is anyone so sensitive that they have to cause a federal investigation beacuse of something Don Cherry said? He says things that offend people all the time. Get over it, and your your self-importance. If you don't like him, don't watch him. Just don't waste my money needlessly investigating him because he might have offended a few 'holier-than-thou' French people.

Did you ever stop to think that he complains alot because he actually loves Canada, and that he thinks things could be better than they are? Some of his views may be non-politically correct, but I am sure that he loves Canada just as much as anyone else.

You people need to get over yourselves and stop being so sensitive and politically correct.

Listen, I don't really like the guy either. I think his tirades against European players, etc., are ridiculous. But I couldn't care less what he says because I rarely watch the guy. If you don't like him, don't watch him. If people stop watching him, they will take him off the air.

I just think it is a huge waste of money to launch an investigation by the Official Languages Commissioner, or Commissioner of Social Engineering more appropraitely. This has nothing to do with her mandate. This is just an attempt by the French language zealots to start spreading the 'language police', or 'political-correctness police' mentality across the rest of Canada.

If you think he should be deported, I'm sure there are tens of thousands of people more worthy of deportation than him. Besides, it is very unfair for you to say that he should be deported, because he is passionate about Canada. It's just that his passion happens to be different than yours. Only someone as arrogant as yourself would demand that someone be deported for something like that.

Anyways, Chretien was a real national embarassment. Perhaps he should have been deported?

Typical response from a separatist freak such as yourself. What if my children were watching that telecast? Since they are French Canadian I guess that discrimination would be geared towards them. I don't think it's right for an egotistical jerk like Cherry to say off the wall comments towards certain people in Canada, especially children. They don't even realize people like you exist in this country of ours, that hate French Canadians. What makes you think that I am "less" Canadian than you? I pay taxes and I was born in this country. Last I saw, Quebec was still a province of Canada.

I'm really beginning to hate Don Cherry but the Language Nazis are far more odious and divisive than he'll ever be.

When did I ever say that I hate French Canadians? Please don't put words into mouth.

You're right, Quebec still is a province of Canada. So why exactly do you feel that they should be able to behave as if they are not? Do you approve of their blatant discrimination and human rights violations against English people? Do you agree with their language Nazis? If Canada is a bilingual country, as you claim, why is Quebec so openly anti-English?

Someday, when you realize that all people in this country are supposed to be equal, and that one group should not be granted special status over another, you might understand where I'm coming from.

Don Cherry will allways be Don Cherry.. he loves to be controvesial, he thrives on that.. and thats why sooo many people hang on his every word.. Ive been in a bar watching the hockey game and every one is talking and what ever.. as soon a Cherry got on the whole place shusshed right up so that every one could hear his rant of the night.. If he wasnt the way he is, he would have been off TV a long time ago... I place him at the same level as say..Jesse Jackson or Pat robertson... they live to spout out thier respective BS to the world, and if folks stopped listening to them they would dry up and blow away.... Now again, please refrain from getting into the "your a separatist" debate please... Let try to stay friendly here and move on, on topic..remember we were bad mouthjing Cherry, not each other...and as I said before if this thread turns into one of people attacking each others character because of their language I will shut it down. Please dont make me do that... So kiss and make up and lets get back to slamming Coaches Corner ok??

CBC SPORTS ONLINE - Don Cherry's recent remarks about francophones have launched a government investigation.

A spokesperson for Dyane Adam revealed Wednesday that the official languages commissioner is investigating Cherry's comments about francophones aired during the Jan. 24 instalment of Coach's Corner on Hockey Night In Canada.

Cherry, who turned 70 on Thursday, was discussing the merits of protective visors as mandatory equipment in the NHL when he said: "Most of the guys that wear them are Europeans and French guys."

Adam agreed to look into the matter when Canadian Parents for French, a group based in B.C., filed a complaint with the ombudsman for CBC, which broadcasts HNIC.

Adam's spokesperson said that "it's an important enough issue that she's going to investigate" whether Cherry's comments violates the Official Languages Act.

CBC spokeswoman Ruth-Ellen Soles told Sports Online Thursday that CBC had yet to be contacted by Adam's office, but "if we're contacted, we plan to co-operate fully."

Soles said Cherry's comments do not represent the views of the CBC and CBC feels Cherry should limit his comments to talking about hockey.

Soles further added that Cherry agreed to focus on hockey issues following a conversation with Nancy Lee, head of CBC Sports.

Adrian Dix of the Canadian Parents for French was bothered by Cherry's comments that questioned the toughness of French-Canadian hockey players.

Said Dix: "It seems to me to say that French-Canadian hockey players lack courage, when the toughest and most talented hockey player in history is [Maurice] Rocket Richard, when we can name 50 French-Canadian hockey players who are known for their toughness and their talent Â… it's a ridiculous comment."

Dr. Adam, a clinical psychologist, began her seven-term as Commissioner of Official Languages of Canada on Aug. 1, 1999.

She is the first female and first francophone from outside Quebec appointed to the post.

Sorry RH. I just get angry when people tell me "to move to the US" because I have some complaints about Canada, or different opinions from their's. I always try to be objective in my arguments.

My original intent for this thread was not to attack French people, but to show how politically correct, and sensitive, the country has become. I can understand that some people may have been offended by Cherry's remarks, as someone always is, but an investigation at the federal level seems a little bit much, IMO.

RoyalHighlander @ Thu Feb 05, 2004 4:49 pm

Don Cheery isnt happy unless hes twisting some ones shorts into a knot,, but thats just him.. as far as starting an investigation over his comments I also belive that is going a bit over board.. but you see thats my opnion and there may be other members here who feel that an investigation IS warranted and they are allowed thier opinion also. This may be a subject that some people feel very stongly about for what ever resons and they should be allowed that right, and if they so choose want an inquirey into this matter let them as they say, "have thier day in court" by all means.. I myself feel very strongly that our govt is not doing enough for our veterans, and our armed forces.. there may be others that dont agree and think the govt is doing enough... This is something I am very passionate about.. ..we all have topics and subjects that mean a lot to us or that have an impact on our daily lives...Thats what makes this place so grerat is we are all allowed our opinions and beliefes with out worrying that some one will belittle us for them.. they may dis agree but they do so in a proper mannr..

Evan @ Thu Feb 05, 2004 5:08 pm

If noone complains then the polticians are allowed to do whatever they want!!!

When you dont complain about things that are wrong and injust then you are just allowing things to continue and are worse than the people who started it and allow it to continue.

blubs @ Thu Feb 05, 2004 6:46 pm

I find this totaly ironic here we have Janet Jackson and Timberlake doing this act ,for want of a better and all the states are in an uproar. Don Cherry says a few things about visors and the french he also mentioned eruopeans. And all of a sudden all of canada wants to lynch him. Don Cherry is Don Cherry what more can you say. I remember him saying years ago Gretzky couldnt play in the NHL he changed his tune real quick.
who would you rather have beside Ron Maclean ? Howie Meeker ? Cherry makes sense in a lotta areas . One area is helmets you would see a lot less high sticking I bet.
We gotta be the weirdest country in the world we bitch rant moan and complain about Cherriy's mouth and look the other way at more more important stuff CANADA ya gotta love this country :D
