Don't you hate when people speak foreign languages in Canada? I mean whose country is this anyway?

Ours. And our language is English or French.

Whenever I'm confronted by people like that in public, I'm always comforted by thoughts of Hannibal Lecter.

His ultimate pet peeve was people who were rude. And he always made a special effort to deliver his own brand of justice to the rude.

I agree. It is extremely rude imo to speak in a language that all of the people around you do not understand if you can speak well in a language that everybody does undestand.

That reminds me of a math teacher I had in high school (except for the Lector analogy). There were these two guys who spoke in punjabi all the time during class even though they could speak perfect english. Eventually the teacher learned the punjabi equivalent of "shut the fuck up". The look on their faces was priceless.

Recently i while i was in a quiet study area, i was asked by a group of girls of middle eastern desent if I would be offended if they played what they reffered to as 'Brown Music'. I was tempted to say "No, but i am offended by the fact that you think I (as a white person) would be offended by 'brown music'. If i a trying to study, all forms of music are equally offensive!" But i ended up saying nothing as i had to get going when they showed up anyway

I love the fact that you had to mention that they were arab girls.....

I love the fact that you jump whenever someone says anything about race. Why don't you "love the fact" that he "had to mention" that they were female, or that he "had to mention" that they were 20-22? Do you think he's more likely being racist than sexist, or ageist?

I find it rude when they speak in other languages so you can't understand them on purpose. however if they are talking with each other and thats the easiest way to do it for them then why not?

VitaminC @ Mon Feb 27, 2006 10:15 pm

When I was in Chicoutimi (completey french-speaking area in Quebec) we would sometimes speak english in public. Sometimes people would stare at us. I guess they thought we were being rude. We were at the point where we could communicate in french, but when you want to just relax and talk without thinking about how to form your next sentence, you revert to your first language.....

Motorcycleboy: Is this an example of immigrants demanding that you adapt to their sensitivities? You have to listen to them speak?

I guess it really is tearing Canada apart that we now must allow foreigners to speak in public.

Theres a difference between demanding the change of name from christmas break to holiday break (lets say, not blaming any immigrants for this) and speaking your own language for ease of use purposes.
