sect and cult are similar, but I think the term sect has fewer negative connotations.

I remember reading a long time ago that the JWs were a cult. I'm not sure if that's still accurate.

No Lily all religion is a cult. Didn't you know we are all brainwashed? I can't think for myself. I'm guilted into trying to be a good person.

ShepherdsDog @ Sun Jan 04, 2009 12:05 am

yeah...no religion has ever supported the idea of free will has it.

Fail.

I'm talking about the whole "I deny God" so then God turns around and says: "Well I deny you". That sounds like shit I use to hear on the playground. Way to miss that, dude.

Wow you're a genius. You call God a five year old because of something you saw on a forum. Then use the term "fail". I think we know who our five year old is.

Well forgive my shitty grammar and poor choice of words, but it still stands that if that is the way God indeed acts, then he is indeed acting like a five year old.

ShepherdsDog @ Sun Jan 04, 2009 12:09 am

umm how does God act praytell?

Good question. If someone treats me like shit my whole life and I turn my back on them, am I acting childish?

ShepherdsDog @ Sun Jan 04, 2009 12:21 am

As far as I can tell, God is pretty laissez-faire when it comes to getting involved with humanity.

OR...Do 5 year olds act like God???!

Hmm, true enough. At least compared to his constant involvement in the good ol' days... :)

I'm not sure, since I wouldn't know and we're not even sure if he exists. What I'm saying is that if he indeed denies someone because they denied him(God), that just seems incredibly childish to me. Like something you would see on a playground. Or like those people we hear about/see where they're fired, but they turn around and say they quit.

Arctic_Menace @ Sun Jan 04, 2009 11:54 am

lily lily:
So.... what do you think God should do when faced with someone who denied His existence all tose years.... invite him in and act all jovial?

Do what most people would try to do. Prove the fucker wrong. :P

Also, if God is this merciful, omniscient being in the sky, then chances are he WOULD invite them in for tea, am I right? ;)

K, 'nuff about the playground already. You just got out of one yourself, you aren't qualified to make the comparison of playground to universal life. Time and wisdom will help you (helps us all day by day) with that...becoming a parent helps too.

It is said, "Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven."

If you were to deny him while you live on this earth, then you do not have a personal relationship with him. You never even asked him in. You wouldn't know him if he slapped you in the face ('cause I'm willing to suppose he has already!). So WHY then, if you were to die and then find that you are still very much alive (just without the body you got used to) would he embrace you with open arms and welcome you home? You're a stranger. Because you don't know him now, you wouldn't recognise him then. He isn't telling you you aren't worth his time and so he won't be bothered. He spends all his existence and being in waiting for us to ask him to be our friend. That's all HE is asking from us. That is ALL. He has made himself available to us. He hasn't gone anywhere, he can't since he IS everywhere. That you choose not to investigate this possibility of God simply and sadly ensures that when you are on your own (that place after death) you would be very alone because although God would be there, because he's everywhere across every dimension, parallel, impossibility and all probabilities, you wouldn't see him. Because you don't know him and because you have never met him.

He knows OF you, but he doesn't know you.

I don't go along with this premise.
I think that it only matters to 'your God and mine' how one conducts themselves in regards to other people. I don't think it is a necessary requirement to consciously acknowledge the existance of a 'supreme being', nor is it necessary to belong to, live according to, or attend, or possess any typeof what we commonly refer to as 'religious doctrines'.
Least ways, I hope this is how it plays out or I'm screwed. In which case I will be joining Arti & co. Save me a seat with a good view!

There are a lot of people I don't know now. There are some people I would have called a stranger not too long ago, that are now my friends.

Not a good point.
