I don't see the problem. If your country is going to provide religious guidance to inmates then include the Wiccans if you've got Wiccan inmates. Ditto for Zorastrians, Rastafarians, etc.

This.

Yes, and let's set all the christian prisoners free so they can go on a mission!!!

Or we cuold just see this as an innocent excersise of freedom of religion in a place that has very few freedoms. Seriously, if you can get upset over this you're trying waaay too hard.

Agreed. Lighten the hell up already!

Yep.

Why is this news? Who cares?

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
There's enough Wiccans in prison to warrant this?

I'm filled with questions.

I could care less that they're doing this though. Good.

I'm not. Modern Pagan religions are often far less judgmental and more based on the individual instead of the group.

Isn't a loss of freedoms part of the plan in prison?

Yep, that's what makes the few freedoms they have left all the more precious.

We should send people to prison AS punishment, not FOR punishment. The loss of freedom IS the punishment; you don't torment them while they're there. Life on the inside is stressful and scary and restless and mind altering. And I don't say that as someone who's soft on crime. I think we should execute murderers and rapists. So the people that you likely most want tormented while in prison wouldn't be in prison, in my world. But I think that once society's decided that the punishment is to be taken away from your life and caged, that's the punishment. That punishment shouldn't come with a steady helping torment on top of it.

I think guaranteed access to a warm bed and 3 squares a day(and other perks that today's prisons allow for...see William Head as just one example of Club Fed..or provincial) are better conditions than many law abiding citizens get.

The priviledges help with crowd control. If you start out taking everything away from them there's nothing left to take as punishment when they break the rules.

As well, the extras like spiritual guidance, some education, some job training go a long ways to reducing recidivism. A prison system that only punishes ends up being waay too expensive because you can't let anybody out.

Nevermind...

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews appears less concerned about the quality of spells cast from behind bars than he is about a backlash from taxpayers, cancelling a Corrections Canada tender for a priest to nurture the spiritual needs of witches in prison.

From same article:
$1:
According to the Corrections Canada tender that's specific to B.C., Roman Catholic chaplaincy services average five hours per week. Both Muslim and Sikh chaplaincy averages 57.83 hours per month, while Buddist chaplaincy averages 45 hours. Jewish chaplaincy averages 17.5 hours per month, while a designation called Community Chaplaincy averages 30 hours.

No true Wiccans in prison, Wiccan Rede states 'An it harm none, do what ye will'. If they're in prison then they've harmed someone and broken the sacred code.

Wiccans have imperfections like most other...humans.

Besides, the Rede is not followed as closely as you'd think by all Wiccans. There are more Wiccan variants than Christian with as many different personal codes as can be imagine. Trying to apply a wiki definition doesn't work.

ShepherdsDog @ Wed Sep 05, 2012 10:09 pm

Isn't Wiccan just one variant of a plethora of neo pagan theists? Sort of like saying all Christians are Roman Catholics or all Buddhists and Muslims all have the same set of beliefs

Yep. Most of the Wiccqns I know or have conversed with couldn't agree for a moment what exactly represented their beliefs. The Rede certainly wasn't it is is generally confined to rookies and tweenies until they grown out of it and mature their faith through exploration, research, and life experience.

Just like anyone of any Faith has.
