Since you guys are going over this again .. I want to reassert my passion regarding Canada's military.

mcpuck mcpuck:
Of course .. this is all theory but shouldn’t we carefully consider their assertion that the USA is superior. Their view of the world is distorted and myopic. Their political system is corrupt. Their education system lacks comprehensiveness and continuity. Corporations run their country. The social welfare system is pathetic. There are more US citizens killed in US cities than are killed in Iraq each year. They are a mess. All these things make the USA unstable and unpredictable.
This is an interesting topic because it brings up many issues.
- Do Canadians carefully consider our strategic position geographically in areas such as:
a) where should our military bases be?
b) Is our military an intelligent, uniquely Canadian military?
c) are our munitions, equipment and vehicle plants situated strategically for a sustained resistance?
d) Do we have a plan to access natural resources (under attack) for a sustained resistance?
e) Is our capital situated correctly
f) where our military and civilian leaders to go in the event of an invasion?
g) Is our military able to repel such an invasion at least for a short time?

We should consider these things.
1) The capital city of Brazil was created in the middle of nowhere (in the late 1950's) because Brazil suffered a number of nasty invasions by a variety of nations after its independence. The city is situated 1000 km inland.

2) In WWII, Russia was able to hold off the Germans for years because the factories were 1000's of KM's away from the front.

3) During WWII, Canada fielded one million troops, thousands of ships, hundreds of Tanks and planes. We moved mountains but were only able to do so because we lived so far from the battle.

We could repel such an invasion if we prepared for it ahead of time.

Currently, this is what the US military will have to defeat - view at you leisure - http://www.forces.gc.ca/site/home_e.asp -

This modern military of Canada's is not large but it is deadly. It is very modern and very well trained.

The US military is finding it hard to deal with Iraq. The US military would have a very rough time up here. That would be just the beginning.

NATO would have to be involved in some way as per a signed treaty.....

When I mean Canda and the US becoming one nation, I mean many years from now. Long after we're all pushing up daisys as the saying goes.

So we should move Ottawa to the Yukon? Sure! Good luck with that. The US is not our enemy per se but there should be limits to our friendship. Seeing them as an unstable superpower is nothing new we have always slept beside the elephant with fears that it may roll over us. The fact that it hasn't does not mean that they won't in future. In fact they are rolling over us right now with BM"D". As the saying goes the road to hell is paved with good intentions. We had best speak up for ourselves and act as a nation rather than a colony if we know what is good for us or we may very well end up like another Honduras.

Actually, I wasn't thinking Yukon at all. As a matter of fact I think Manitoba is the best spot for such a transplant. There is a perfect spot just north of Grand Rapids between Cedar lake and Lake Winnipeg. This area is militarily defensible for various reasons, has existing infrastucture (Electrical Lines, Highway, water) and the area is an extraordinarily beautiful location for a city.

- The city would bring added population (4 to 5 hundred thousand) and revenue to a "have not" province.
- Ottawa would remain a vibrant city in Ontario
- The Government would be more centrally located geographically.
- The city's contruction would stimulate Canada's economy for decades in a plethora of ways.
- The city can be the civil engineering wonder of the world.
- The city would encourage further population growth in Canada's north.

I'd been thinking about this intermittently over the last couple of weeks and was going to suggest somewhere near Deer Lake, in northwestern Ontario as a potential site for a future national capital, but I like mcpuck's Grand Rapids proposal too.

One major challenge would be to relocate the capital without turning the country's fourth largest city into a ghost town. How did Bonn fare after the capital of Germany was moved back to Berlin?

Hey, why do you all even listen to Ann Coulter and Tucker Carlson? They are like small children- their statement are made for ATTENTION. Many Americans are, granted, ignorant of Canada, but they generally do not agree with the extremist viewpoints shared by these two clowns. That would be the same as me believing that all Canadians think I'm an idiot because of an ATTENTION-getting statement made by Carolyn Parrish. If I'm channel surfing and see Ann or Tucker, I just change the channel 8)

I consider myself to be a conservative American and I think Ann Coulter is just a mouth, a button pusher, fell off the turnip cart, and I wonder who in the heck would pay perfectly good money for any of her books? Although any nasty thing she said about the French is probably true. :)

PJB @ Wed Mar 09, 2005 12:50 pm

Hell, I would go along with relocating Canada's capital to somewhere other than where it is. I would prefer an island out in the middle of nowhere so we don't have to smell the bullshit. That being said it will never happen. Too many people live too close to Ottawa. Ottawa is situated in Ontario which maintains the idea that it is the centre of the Universe.

Insofar as the United States annexing Canada, I really do not believe that any sane American would even contemplate the idea. The current American administration is focused on democratizing every nation that it thinks needs it, or values its resources. Canada is already a democracy and the United States has trade alliances to get our resources already so why should it bother.

If, way off in the future, the two countries become one I think it will be the other way around. The United States will become part of Canada as a result of the complete collapse of the American economy.

GreatBriton GreatBriton:
and who like watching people play baseball in the "World Series" despite the fact that only American and Canadians teams compete in it.

Thank you! That title has driven me nuts forever! I’m glad I’m not the only one! It’s like the National Hockey League that consists of two nations!

What did she say about the french?

Ruxpercnd @ Sun Mar 13, 2005 9:45 pm

"The key to the U.N.'s global warming study was man's use of aerosol spray. You have to know the French were involved in a study concluding that Arrid Extra Dry is destroying the Earth. In a world in which everyone smelled, the French would be at no disadvantage. Aerosol spray. How convenient." -- Ann Coulter

Actually, Coulter's comment is meaningless BS. There are a lot of real problems that the French present that deserve serious comment. But that is another story.

Oooh la la?

Coulter is, if you'll pardon my language, a dried up cute with a hate for all humanity. Since you're already pardoning my language...I wouldn't fuck her with your dick, even if you'd lend it to me.

Somebody should toss one into her a time or two though. Maybe it'd smarten her up a tad.
