That's the big thing here folks. It was organized by parents who didn't want to invite this girl. Other than feel betrayed by her own classmates, she doesn't have any real legal leg to stand on.
What I do find humourous on this thread is those that scream for tolerance and equality have labelled the parents as inbred, bigots, unevolved, cousin dating folks. I guess tolerance and equality go out the window when you disagree with someone.
There is a little more to it.

In March, after the Itawamba County School District refused to allow McMillen to bring a female date to the prom, the district canceled the event altogether. McMillen and her lawyers from the American Civil Liberties Union challenged that decision in court, and a judge ruled the district could not bar McMillen and her date.
Sure it was "parentally and privately organized" but that was only because they went and canceled the official one because they couldn't stomach the thought of the lesbians attending. They then (and very likely used the schools help and resources) organized another one.
Would you feel the same if it was an interracial couple? I'm sure that crap happened a few decades ago.
Why didn't they allow the official prom to go ahead and let whatever private citizens who wanted to, boycott that prom and organize their own? Perhaps because they knew many (or most) would attend the official non-exclusionary one and they didn't want to make people choose.
This was a very awful thing they choose to do.

So you're saying that people here are intolerant because they won't tolerate the intolerance of the parents?
What I am saying is either one is tolerant or one isn't. Selective tolerance isn't tolerance.
But then you're being intolerant of the people who are intolerant of intolerant people. Next are you going to start your own forum, where the only comment allowed will be "fine with me."

Any proof of them using school help or resources?

Yes I would feel the same. You can't change people who don't want to change.

I agree it was an awful thing to do but in situations like this forcing as issue usually ends with some degree of violence. If I was this girl I would be more pissed at my fellow students rather than their parents.
The one question I have is, why did the students not divulge any information to this girl? Maybe this girl managed to ostracize her classmates by her actions!

How am I being intolerant here? I find humour in the hypocrosy of some. I also never claimed to be tolerant, I have my prejudices and some here know what they are and they won't change anytime soon.

No but it certainly isn't unreasonable to think it.

At the risk of going off-topic... uh Iraq & Afghanistan and every single attempt by us to makes them think like us. What about the entire civil rights movement and desegregation? That was forced on them. They used national guardsmen to make that happen. But I digress. This was not about the students feeling like this (although probably some did), but about the school and the parents not being able to tolerate it. It was the kids prom, not the parents.

I don't think this would have led to violence, just a bunch of indignant parents.

Or they told people if she happens to show up the event is instantly cancelled and no
soup prom for them.
Again, at the risk of going off-topic this is one of the instances where I point out that we have no such moral standing to dictate to others how to live abroad based on their intolerances.

Well, you've really hoist people on their own petard here. If they claim to be tolerant, they have to tolerate other people's intolerance. Niiiiice. So nobody can complain about being discriminated against because then they're not being tolerant themselves.

I worked with a girl who was openly gay.
She was hesitant at bringing her partner to her first office Christmas party.
I talked to her with another co-worker and convinced her, since we all knew she was gay, what's the problem.
We'd never seen her partner, but when I did, I was really glad that she brought her.
Too bad she didn't like guys... damn waste of a hottie.

I have no problem with people complaining against discrimination, just when they then propose their own form of it. Which many "tolerant" people are guilty of!
As an aside, lets look at the word tolerance. It merely means to condone something without agreeing with or liking it! So most "tolerant" people are just bigots and racists!

I live in a really small town and the girl who worked for me split with her bf. She was of the type I'd have to ask her not to leave he "So I'm Bi" coffee cup on the front counter for customers to wonder over.
She went to the grad prom with her gf, they decked themselves out and had a ball. A few eyes were raised, the really uptight STFU and didn't even gossip and we all had a snicker over it.
She's like 18, doesn't know what her sexuality is yet. She'll figure it out.
When she quit to go on to college, we got her a tee shirt with "Yes, I'm Bi" on the front and "No, you can't watch" on the back.
Point being even a little town known as redneck can get over that shit about who you sleep with and who you don't. Only matters if it's you or not you.
Grow up

So society should tolerate intolerance then? Tolerance only goes so far. I don't thinks its hypocritical to call the people in that a bunch of ignorant fools for collectively trying to ruin this girl's prom (and succeeding). Even being the most tolerant of people doesn't mean one can't call a spade a spade.

Well she tried to ruin the prom for everyone else by calling on the ACLU. So they had a private party that she was not invited to its over.
Worry about your own back yard and stop looking down South pointing your self rightous fingers and singing stupid songs anout the South (Southern man Niel Young)
She is a trouble maker, for her everyone has to suffer, to hell with that.

Coming from the country that uses its military to do just that you can shove that shite up your ass.
She did nothing but want to take her date to the prom. A bunch of homophobic uptight neanderthals told her she couldn't and so she sought help no different then if she were black and denied because of that. I suppose if she were excluded because she was bringing a black
man as a date you would have had a problem with that. She graduated and deserved to go to her problem. End of story. A bunch of petulant homophobes having a "private" party is no different then having a "private" club,
gentiles only. How about when those very same people hosting a private party also want a private school without any people who offend their sensibilities. You had that once. They called it segregation.
You come on our site and spout your opinion and its considerable anti-Canadian rhetoric so don't pull the injured little waif routine.

If you worry so much about what Canadians think about the south don't come to a Canadian web site.
Yeah a Canadian web site where I would say 60 to 70 % of all of its topics are USA related.
