I'm already anticipating that this will go about 25 pages before getting locked.

Like it'll do any good at this stage in the ongoing social collapse. Mr. Closed-Barn-Door, please meet Mr. Horse-Running-Away.

Baby steps Thanos, baby steps, something is better than nothing. You know the saying. It takes hitting rock bottom before you can start moving up again...or something along those lines.

DD, that country has yet to hit rock bottom. Not even close....

Freakinoldguy @ Wed Jan 16, 2013 8:50 am

He'd have alot more luck passing a bill that restricted who could get these weapons rather than the weapons themselves and with the millions of them floating around America I can't see any measures he takes having an effect before let's say, about 2050.

So, I wish him luck because his bills won't pass and he'll either look like he's acting merely for political purposes or worse yet, they'll all get shot down revealing he's just another lame duck president.

So, whether you agree with how he's attempting to stop the carnage at least you've got to give him credit for making the attempt because whatever happens a dialogue about public safety and gun control has been opened up on a much higher level than anytime before which is at least a step in the right direction.

Can't figure out if you mean that in a positive or negative manner. I think it has or should have atleast ( hopefully )in regards to mass gun violence with the Sandy Hook Massacre.

Obama's proposal includes providing for armed security in public schools.

Anyone care to call him names for that idea?

I don't think anyone was calling him names . . . but this whole bill has an air of 'throw out every idea, and see what Congress passes..' to it.

The ban on large magazines is pointless, now that there are plans all over the internet to easily build a tin box with a spring in it yourself.

edit: getting into the bad habit myself - 'magazines', not 'clips' is the proper name.

That's not what DD's article noted;

$1:
And Obama may give schools flexibility to use grant money to improve safety. But he is not expected to call for armed guards in schools, a position promoted by the NRA.

In the political reality south of the border, armed guards are probably the only solution that would satisfy 2nd Amendment proponents and the NRA. The only question surrounding that is who's going to pay for them?

Given that tax increases are considered verboten by most of Congress, it means more debt or government gives up something else. And let's be honest - it won't be social programs that get massive cuts to pay for something like that - so what do you cut? The military? Yet another golden goose that can only get token cuts, not the huge cuts necessary for such a program.

Doesn't leave much else, do it?

$1:
The broad package Obama will unveil will also include efforts to stop bullying and boost availability of mental health services.

I'm glad he's not ignoring the problem, instead of focusing on the symptom.

BartSimpson @ Wed Jan 16, 2013 10:44 am

Now let's see if the anti-bullying provisions get gutted in committee like they always do.

commanderkai @ Wed Jan 16, 2013 11:44 am

*Shrugs* Anti-bullying provisions are generally bullshit, as teachers and school administrators rarely enforce already existing anti-bullying rules. I was quite harassed in both Canadian and American elementary/high schools by other students on account of my psoriasis, and it only stopped the moment I realized I needed to stand up to such individuals through...well punching a few people in the face. It's really no different compared to drug laws. Sure they're great, but if police don't enforce them, they're not very useful.
