Including the minimu wage hike in this bill would mean the stimulus package would not be passed. Manchin would vote against it and the fight could drag on for at least a couple of months. Taking it ou will get the bill passed in a couple of weeks and have cheques going to people in need.

Biden has 4 years to get the wage hike passed to meet his promise. Manchin might go with a phased in approach taking 4 or 5 years to get to $15. There are back door methods that can be included in a tax bill such as penalties for corporations that do not pay at least $15 per hour. Just like we saw in Canada the claim is that small businesses cannot afford the incease and people will lose jobs. As we have seen the transisiton might be painful but businesses adapt. Fast food costs more, etc, etc. Biden has to find a way to get a minimum wage bill item through the legislative process. The nay sayers who claim it cannot be done during the economic recovery are a powerful group that might be more concerned with political donations than their constituents. It will take time, horse trading etc to get the required votes. Perhaps in two years the senate balance will move enough they can have am easier time gettig it passed. BIden is a deal maker that knows how to get bills passed in both houses.

Biden will lose points in the short term as the media will make statements like Scape has posted. I don't think the concept of a higher minimum wage will go away so media pressure could be beneficial especially if they concentrate in the ridings of the senators who are against the increase. All Biden needs is a few Replublican senators to vote in favour and the bill will pass.

The Democrats aren't going to get anything meaningful done because they care more about arcane Senate rules than actually helping people. And then they wonder why they lose every other election. The only way Democrats can win is after Republicans have fucked everything up so there's really no other choice for voters.

The Dems are only united during elections. There's always a few of them who manage to get elected in a red area who end up voting and behaving like quasi-GOP when they get to Congress. It's a major problem for them because there's always enough of these ones to affect important bills. The GOP don't have the same issue. They walk in goosestep from beginning to end and only break ranks when some of them have some kind of attack of conscience, like with the renegade seven senators who voted that Trump was guilty in the impeachment. Such instances are few and far between though.

Exactly. Senators like Manchin are effectively another Republican vote in the senate. But people like Schumer are a problem too. He doesn’t know how fight nor does he care to learn.

Because undoubtedly, if the situation were reversed and Trump/Pence were president and the senate were evenly split like it is now, Moscow Mitch would have forgotten the filibuster existed the first chance he got.
