I am Canadian, & I am ashamed!I moved to Pontiac, Michigan in 1992 and returned to the Ottawa area sept. 2002. I have an American wife & two wonderfull AMERICAN daughters. Now, my rant:
I am SICK and TIRED or the constant smugness and naivete displayed by my countrymen as the country succumbs to left-wing social engineering and corrupt politicians.Instead of Canada "kicking ass", I think Canada's ass got kicked the minute that twisted-faced idiot-savant took office! What good is "universal" health-care when it takes a year for a CT scan, or prostate surgury? What a joke, but you can bet that the "leaders" of this backwater shit-hole ALL have gold plan private health care plans! CHECK IT OUT! Taxes are @ criminal levels, 27% of the popular vote gets you a liberal dictatorship, gas taxes that don't go to transportation infrastructure, an immigration policiy right out of alice in wonderland, really DUMB & expensive govt. pie-in-the-sky initiatives that time after time prove worthless, and on and on...
Anyone wanna have a SERIOUS discussion about where we REALLY stand in the world? We are a complete joke. The wealthy don't come here, just the downtrodden who believe most of the "happy Canadian " bullshit. I will be moving back to the U.S. in june of this year, and won't look back (or come back, even for a visit). My family can't wait, and two of my brothers are in the process of leaving. Wake-up! LOOK around. Fireworks on the first of july, good brew, & poutine do NOT a country make. P.S.you westerners have NO idea what has happened in the eastern part of this country. Official bilingualism is a one-way-street, 'an it aint going my way...peace.

I would like to know what the point of your post was.. Did you want us to say"Please dont go, please stay"? OR maybe feel sorry for you?? I doubt you will get sympathy from any one here. All I can say is Buh Bye have a good trip, dont let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, and quit whining its not becoming of you...

ABSOLUT_SS @ Fri Feb 14, 2003 3:43 pm

Ya know Highlander, I did say serious. Anyway, don't get me wrong. I won a gold medal for my province vs North Carolina in an amateur boxing tournament some years ago, and you couldn't wipe the smile off my face for a year. I wore that medal to bed! I have always considered myself Canadian, and proud of it. We have many examples of a countrys' harshest critics also being its most staunch supporters. I HATE what our country has become, and refuse to be one of those flag-waving no-minds who never challenge the status-quo. You have a military background, judging by you're posts. You like what the fools on the hill have made of our military capabilities? Anyway, this time next year, I'll be the guy at the local tavern somewhere in MI, sticking up for Canada...again! But CHRIST, could my government HELP me with that task once in a while?

ABSOLUT_SS @ Fri Feb 14, 2003 3:58 pm

...my point was to basically create debate about what is so GREAT about Canada, as opposed to what is wrong with it. Any ideas? Can somebody, anybody tell me? Don't just say "yay" Canada, and let the Elitists play social engineering games with MY country. I bet half of you, at least, don't even vote. Remember, Nero played the violin while his country burned! Insert abuse here:

We are not as stupid as you think. Our savant was elected by a majority of the people. And if it wasnt him it would be another corupt bugger.BTW were you here to vote for some one else?? Just curious
ABSOLUT_SS ABSOLUT_SS:
of this backwater shit-hole

I guess you havent traveled down south much then, I have and can tell you stories about it..And excuse me you may be gone but its still my country, and you said a serious discussion right? So stop with the "shithole" comments
ABSOLUT_SS ABSOLUT_SS:
gas taxes that don't go to transportation infrastructure,

At least the bridges on OUR highways arent falling into the Mississpi river. HAve you driven through Arkansas lately? I drove all over the U.S. for a number of years..
ABSOLUT_SS ABSOLUT_SS:

Why should I feel downtroden??Explain that to me please. And as far as Happy Canadian bullshit?, I am a very happy Canadian. Ive served my country, Ive been around the world and seen quite a bit. Ive seen sights over seas, that would change your tune very quickly my friend.

What ?you couldnt be bothered to learn a second language? I grew up speaking BOTH official languages, too easy as we said in the forces. BTW im originally from ONT and have lived in Cornwall, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, and Edmonton, so im not actually a"westerner LOL. Ive also lived in California, Montana, Utah, Nevada,so I am able to compare also, and myself I like it just fine right here

Fireworks on the fourth of july, shit brew, and "American Cuisine"do NOT a country make.

The grass is not allways greener on the other side, it only apears that way.. And to reiterate my previous comment. Go away, leave, take the family that dont want to be here with you, and I wish you the best of luck, what else can I say

Well of the top of my head,
Its not the U.S., now theres a good start

ABSOLUT_SS @ Fri Feb 14, 2003 5:25 pm

First, my apologies for offending anyone. I shouldn't log on here right after reading the daily papers. I speak as a Canadian, so I feel I have the right to criticise. As far as Arkansas (a poor but beautifull state) goes, anybody's kids going to school in a portable? Bridges falling into the mississippi river? Ever take a look under some of the bridges in Toronto? I'm in the bridge building business, and business is BOOMING. Look, I don't wanna pull anybody's tail here, but this country needs a good kick in the ass end, not more fawning about how great we are compared to the U.S. according to the completely discredited UN. The UN has Khadaffi as chair of a human rights commision! When ya have a bunch of socialist ideologues (the UN) making lists, guess who gets to the top real quick? By downtrodden, I meant the poor immigrate here, not the rich. Why? Because the wealthy are generally better educated than the poor, and know there are greener pastures and don't buy into nationalist sentiment by young dreamers or old fools. And one last thing: Is speaking freely about a point of view somehow wrong? Bye telling me not to hit my ass on the door on the way out, you have dismissed my sentiments and replaced it with a "love it or leave it" attack because I don't agree with everthing you do. Yay Canada YaY!

HollywoodHitman @ Fri Feb 14, 2003 5:50 pm

Absolut........Canada is not the US.......For that I am grateful........The US DOES have a better equipped military, and there are some opportunities there that do not exist........

However, even though you're an ex-pat, remember that the Yanks are by nature isolationist, militant and generally ( I DID SAY GENERALLY) ignorant and intolerant of other cultures and countries. The US did win Dubya Dubya 2 all by themselves dontcha know.......

My girlfriends mother is American, I am part American, and I continually hear her anti-Canadian bullshit, saying how the US is so much better than Canada. U know what? I'll tell you the same thing I wanna tell that psycho, but don't so I still get laid at home.......If you don't like it GET F OUT! Canada isn't perfect, and I support a more active role for Canada's military and politics on the world stage.....I agree with you on those points...The population and concurrent governments are responsible for that. I HATE it when the people say "we shouldn't go to war, we shouldn't do this, we shouldn't do that..........Whats this WE stuff? If they're not gonna be the ones in harms way, they should just keep quiet and support the troops.........

As for the whole gold medal thingy, threatening people on here, especially those who serve their country, Canada or the US, either or, I'll tell ya what.........All the gold medals in the world won't help you pry a well motivated infanteer off your backside.........Good luck to you in your new country............By the way........would you have the balls to stand up and defend your new homeland? We'll see..........

ABSOLUT_SS @ Fri Feb 14, 2003 6:32 pm

Thanks for the thought provoking response, hollywood. First off, the gold medal routine was a memory of great pride when I was younger, not a threat of any kind. My point was to show that, yes, I have loved this country & do to this day. I just don't like what has happened to it. I also don't like intrusive babying govt. meddling in my life. I much prefer the sink or swim rule. I have made something of myself after a few mistakes in life, but I never expected the governments' help in any way, and never asked for any.
And now the big one: I like to think I'm too old(39) to go to war personally, but I would have to say I would definitely answer any call without question. Seeing my CHILDREN go scares me a lot more than my own mortality. I owe a lot to the United States for giving me opportunity and a chance I don't think I would have had in Canada. I guess I miss the U.S. a lot more than I thought I would until I came back to Canada. I still don't know where ya got the "threat" part though....

ABSOLUT_SS @ Fri Feb 14, 2003 6:36 pm

...I know the Americans won WW2 all by themselves, but didn't Italy help? LOL

HollywoodHitman @ Fri Feb 14, 2003 8:42 pm

Absolut..........I must have misunderstood the whole boxing analogy.....I apologize.......It's unfortunate that you've felt as though you need to start a new life for your family across the border, there is too much Canadian talent and moving South. I agree that our country is in disarray, the present government has had much to do with this, but it'sbeen a downward spiral since long before I was born....('74)......I think now we've just hit terminal velocity sofar as our country's state is beginning to parallel the US's.

Sofar as our troops going to war, I find it interesting that not too many of our politicians have ever served their country in the purest sense......Putting on a uniform, getting lousy pay and working their asses off, with little or no thanks from the government or the public.....Look how long it took for the country to recognize the soldiers brave actions in the Medac Pocket in the former Yugoslavia....10 Years!!!! As I mentioned before, it's a shame that our troops probably won't get an opportunity to show their mettle, because our PM has no spine. Again, no civilized soldier wants war, but I think soldiers would rather be IN the fight, rather than relegated to guarding an unimportant airfield, or have the politicians "hide" them from the fight in another country.............

War is the last resort of a civilized nation, we have arrived at that last resort. Diplomacy is exhausted, and once this threat is removed, we will move on to the next.....Korea.........

The US has certainly got lots to offer, I know this. I would have served in the US military if they'd have taken me, at least there I would have been able to practice my craft and have a career where there is money and opportunity to develop professional soldiering skills. Instead I have opted for a career as a reservist, because for many, a career in the Reg's here is just not what it used to be.

Once again, good luck in your move, with your family.

gemini39 @ Sat Feb 15, 2003 8:27 am

Hell, I'm afraid to even get started here. Being a Canadian living in the U.S., I can honestly say there are definitely 2 sides to this argument/discussion. Each of the previous posts has made good & bad points for their side. I can say this though...both countries have their good & bad points. Lets face it people, no matter where you choose to live in this world, there will ALWAYS be something to complain about, something that needs improvement. And politicians everywhere are idiots. On a personal note though, as I've said before...I will always be Canadian in my heart.
