Civiltech quote: 'You present the Tommy Douglas Inst. as a fair and unbiased approach, but the Frase Inst. which doesn't share you political views isn't.'

Wrong what I say is that the Tommy Douglas Institute declares fully what it stands for and where it's bias is; they stand for people, they don't hide behind an agenda they state it outright. Now the Fraser Instutite does not declare it is a Conservative influenced, or corporate agenda influenced think tank does it, no it is independant or so it says? Not whether it represents my views or not, but whether it states its bias upfront. That is my point.

I am...this arguement sucks onboth our sides..... I thin the Fraser Institute is an excellent source of information, an educated thought on where our country can go....you thnk Tommy Fraser is ok....

Civiltech, the Fraser Institute releases an annual accrediation of high schools in BC. And they consistently rate all the top 5 (and usually all the top ten) as private schools. You know why? Because they base their findings on the grade 12 provincial exams. What's wrong with this? Well, it doesn't take into consideration the fact that private schools screen their applicants. And private schools don't have special needs students. It sure is easy to get a good ranking if every student was honour roll BEFORE they enrolled.

See, the Fraser institute is full of all sorts of wonderful studies like the Fraser Report's high school ratings. They conveniently neglect the great equalizing information, and use scewed data to push a privatisation agenda. That's a serious problem, because they claim to be non-partisan, yet their data is used to support privatisation, even though a complete or logical study would show that the provided data is inconclusive at best.

So how can the Fraser Institute be a good source of information? I take nothing for granted from them because their studies that I'm familiar with are obviously and purposefully skewed to fit their agenda. So why wouldn't their other studies be the same?

Maybe it's ok for you to look at their information and check the sources and alternate views and in that sense it might be a good place to start, but it is not a credible source of information. But it pretends to be, and THAT is the problem.
I think the Tommy Douglas insitute is merely a bunch of left wing socialists looking to present there views without being tacked with the unpopular NDP stigma.
Am I to understand that people don't equate the name Tommy Douglas with the NDP? Odd, most of the people I know link Douglas with the NDP almost immediately, just like they link Trudeau to the Liberals and Stephen Harper with the Alliance.

Everyone is quick to point out the Frase instistitute and there interpretations, but somehow the Tommy Douglas Instis. is OK, though it has it's own faults. We can post one site here, but not the other...interesting.

I now see why only certain sites are posted here. Because apparantly there is a "right" way to Canada, and a "wrong" way. This is unbelievable that Tommy Douglas site can be here, but nothing else that may venture over the center line.

I have requested several times the site for the Fraser Institute, and the Canadian-Israeli Committe be posted. No reseponse.

Indeed...a truly Canadian site. Excuse me now, I have to go review this site to get a clean and true understanding of whatit is to be Canadian. Apparantly I had it all wrong, and my political views are simply not in standing with being a Canadian!

Rah rha for tommy Douglas Institute, down with theFrase Institute. What the hell was I thinking? A free and politically diverse country? nAH, there is the right wing agenda, and the socialist path of righteousness
I just submitted the Fraser Institute link.
It won't work, I've done it a few times and no one acknowledges it.

Wierd that there is now a whole division for Canadian Republicans on the links portion and a site to the "Citizens for a Canadian Republic" but we can't have those nasty "fraser institute" types here!

Hmmmmm.... a Canadian Republic. I like the sound of that. HEY! Lets call it the United States of America! and...and we can be the 51 state. Yah....because being a republic makes us Canadian.

Calumny @ Fri Oct 29, 2004 8:46 pm

I posted the N.A. republic link because it's good to be aware of different ideas.

As we're larger than the U.S., I think we'd be worthy of more than one state.

Good to have a wide range of ideas including how many states we should be chopped into, etc. Lord forbid though if anyone on the wrong side of the political spectrum should have their site posted to have their say!

I figure if we re gonna go the republic way, we should start acting like one.

here is an excellent site all could really learn from:

http://www.tonguetied.us/

I have requested it posted. Like any other site not fitting into the "definition" of Canadian here, I am sure it will be turned down!

Calumny @ Fri Oct 29, 2004 9:22 pm

I don't think many Canadians would favour a 'republic' form of government. Hasn't worked any better for the U.S. than ours is currently working for us.

The U.S. is pretty much like Whitney Houston, started off with a lot of promise and may still be envied by some for looks and money, but most wouldn't want to be her.

Calumny @ Fri Oct 29, 2004 10:05 pm

Looks like the 'Canadian-Israeli Committee' link is up. Apparently the site has recently relocated.

Took a look at the 'tonguetied.us' site. I don't think many Vive regulars are real enchanted with the politically correct (PC) nonsense that has befallen N.A. these past thirty years. Whether the 'tonguetied' site is a sibcere attempt to explore the problems associated with PC is another question entirely.

In terms of Vive, it clearly presents itself as a site focussed on Canadian sovereignty and 'progressive' policies. This being the case, I think it has proven itself very accepting in the links that have been accepted, in that not all of these are to sites that align to the site's goals.

I think it's fairly obvious to anyone reading Vive posts that contributors aren't all 'leftists'. However, most accept that they are all part of a greater community where their own needs, desires, etc. can not always be paramount.

In many ways those who choose to identify themselves as 'right' or 'left' are two sides of the same six year old coin, one believing they should be allowed to do and have what they want because it's their 'right' and the other living in a world of candyfloss trees and sugar candy flowers to which they believe most should aspire. What neither side realizes is that the world is slowly growing beyond them, and out of their control.

These groups often have names that disguise their true nature and imply concern for patients (Friends of Medicare, Tommy Douglas Institute, Canadian Health Coalition etc.). The CHF is the first group in Canada which is attempting to tell the other side of the story. It will not engage in lobbying and is committed to ethical public policy research aimed at providing the public with fact based information.

It's not a big deal. sites like www.dumblaws.com are quite right of center. They don't try and hide that. Most of the members there are staunch republicans.

To say that this site represents the full political spectrum is just a lie. You can come out of the closet. It's ok to say this site is another left of center site. Like the "Friends of Healthcare" or the "tommy douglas institue."

I have no qualms calling the Fraser Institute a right wing think tank. See? It's easy to call a spade a spade. Try it!

vivelecanada is some leftist concept for a great Canadian Sovereignty. To try and disguise itself as a non-partisan or a rallying point for all Canadians of every stripe is a joke! You can pick up on the tone within minutes of being here.

It's ok to be left, just don't try and dupe others into saying it encompasses all Canucks. Lets face it our health care system is in shambles...and throwing more money into the pit ain't gonna help! Get ready for more 2 tier. It's been here a while, and is our savour to the very system you want to keep around!

ciau,

I don't think I indicated the site 'represents the full political spectrum'. What I said was 'I think it's fairly obvious to anyone reading Vive posts that contributors aren't all 'leftists'.

You seem unwilling to accept the fact that people don't need to brand themselves 'right' or 'left'. Refusing to buy into every dubious or self-serving view of the 'right' does not in itself make one a leftist, and vice versa.
