I'm curious to know if there are any areas in Quebec where an English speaking person could get by with no French? Other than Montreal or other larger cities. I'm thinking more of rural areas or northern Quebec.
I think if Quebec wants to go for the nation within a nation status (whatever that means ) it would likely be in there best interest to turn the entire province into French first English second ....or at least try
That has absolutely nothing to do with what I asked.
Yes I understand there Belinda and unfortunately it has everthing to do with what you said
Spent a few weeks on the Magdalene Islands one summer and ran into a fisherman who I think was from Newfoundland, and he was very proud to announce that he'd lived there for 30 years and refused to learn french. Depends, I guess, on what you mean by "get by" - you could certainly survive.

What I find remarkable about the Quebec French is their inability and refusal to converse with Nova Scotia French. Most of my French friends now go to France where they are accepted and the French know how to speak real French or at least the kind of French spoken in N.S. My French friends have been treated even more rudely in Quebec than I as an English speaker. My one and only attempt at speaking French in Quebec earned me a reply of "Non parlez Anglais". Who'd a thought it?
Well your when in Rome analogy is silly because there are people from Quebec in the Military that can barely say Hello in English. Some can speak English really badly, ask some Ex Airforce members how hard it is to fly with a pilot who can't speak the International Language of Aviation? Officer's must be bilingual in FRENCH but French speaking officer doesn't have to know how to speak Englais to get promoted how's that for discrimination? The old double standard in Canada make everything in the Military and Federal Goberment be about Francais so the English speakers can get screwed country wide. Quebec was founded on many languages most were Native so your french analogy regarding Quebec is beyond arrogrant.

So anyway, I guess it's possible to settle in Quebec, only speak English and still get by comfortably. I wonder if the local utilities and services try to accomodate English speakers or do they make it difficult for them?

Actually, Québec has always been french only. Just never was officially. Bill 101 came to existance when english became the predominant language in Montreal, to a point that you couldnt get service in french almost anywhere. One of the few times Québécers didnt shut up and live with it, we worked hard to bring our language back in montreal
Societal elements such as language should be permited to evlove freely without Canadians being oppressed for the language in which they choose to communicate.

No where. People with understand half of what your saying, in Saguenay anyways (Where I live). Not to count the fact that when they learn your not a tourist, that your actually living here, they will dislike you.
You are full of BS, as I've already found what I was looking for.

I'll speak english with a smile to a tourist. But I won't speak a word to someone that lives here.
And that's what makes you what you are.

They can go suck a lemmon, what should it matter if one person can speak English and another is bilingiual or two people bilingual but English is the only language they have in common then those peopl should communicate in English and be happy about it.

Then shouldn't Quebecers learn and speak Huron? (exempting the north of course)

Doesnt mean I promote the use of my native language in my province (That is 80% french) that I don't believe in knowning more then 1 language. I speak a total of 5.
Stats say 29% similar to the German-Canadian population of Saskatchewan at 28.7%

So you expect people to automatically know French as soon as they cross the border? If they had any jobs there I'd say we English should flood in and take over the place.

The verb learn in this sentence imply that there is an effort to be made in order to aquired a second language.
