7mm mag is a great all around bullet. Good for deer, moose, elk and bear. I've got a 7mm STW, my Prairie Laser. 7mm round on an 8mm mag casing. 3999 fps muzzle, but the damn thing weighs about 14 pounds loaded. I'll keep it as a range gun for shooting steel at stupid distances
Do you guys actually have a season on griz? How hard is it to get drawn?
There is a limited entry season for Griz, I think maybe 20 tags only drawn per year in this area. I don't actually hunt them, I'm against hunting Griz, but I still pack a gun capable of stopping one if push comes to shove.
I would think that 7mm STW would just be a range gun. I bet it's a shoulder buster, not to mention that it prabably costs $5 every time you pull the trigger........ I load my 7mm with 175 grain Grand Slams, right around 2900 fps. I've always prefered using a big hard hitting bullet over a lighter, faster and flatter traveling bullet.
Believe it or not, that STW is about as hard shooting as a 30-06. But yup, it was pretty $$$ to spend a day poking holes in paper. I carry a Mossberg 500 Persuader for black bears. Came with a pistol grip, and it slings nice on my back for bowhunting. 2 x slugs followed up with 4 buckshot tends to make the most assertive bear into a housecat
Did you ever hear about that PPCLI Cpl who shot the black bear with the 12 ga bear scare? During that last summit they had in Banff. The bear came into camp and climbed a tree. The troop walked up underneath the bear and let him have it point blank with the firecracker. Apparently it penetrated the hide, and lodged in the front quarter. When it went off, the bear died instantly, however, the imbedded jounalists had a hey day with it.
300th post!!! Woo Hoo!!!
