Most recent (past four or five years) DSLR's have live view. The advantage with live view (as in your LCD displays your image 'live') on a tripod is that you can accurately focus very narrow depth-of-field/DOF (the bit that's in focus).

On the dandelion shots I posted, the DOF is probably about 2 or 3 mm. That's a tough job hand-held and using the viewfinder. Totally do-able on a tripod using live view and zooming in on the LCD.

Another advantage with live view is it locks the mirror up. This stops the mirror slapping up and down and lessens vibration so your image is as sharp as possible.

I mainly just use my 70-300mm lens for my macro because it has a really good image stabilizer so I rarely need a tripod.

This photo has a very narrow dof, only the front of the caterpillar and nail is in focus, the rest is bokeh. Taken a couple of days ago. (hand held too)

Pretty good for handheld with a 70-300! You must workout!

Yeah, it's heavy with the camera. I call it my "big honking lens"!

Wish I'd focused more on the bee in this one.

I like the lighting on the magnolia!

Very nice Strutz! I agree, nice lighting. Great focus and composition EB!

This white fawn lily is actually from Easter, they spring up all over Vancouver Island during that time hence they are sometimes referred to as Easter lilies.

Very nice Canucker! I will have to crop some more of my shots to web size so we can show and tell a bit more!

Here's 35L shot in the fog. It's actually in colour but it's tough to tell.

I love that shell shot EB and yes, that bridge shot does look like it was taken in B&W. Obviously fog affects colour in an interesting way.

Very striking lily canucker.

That magnolia pic was the first close-up of a flower I shot with my camera. I liked that one so much that I started taking more.

And this is just one of my personal faves. The male is so striking you almost don't notice the nesting female in the background. Lighting was in my favor for this one too.

Very nice both of you! Great colours Strutz! You can barely see the red EB, but you can. I've noticed I've had to re-size my photos for this site as well EB (and slow).

A lot of my photos are on my external hard drive, or home computer. I'm working off a new laptop, so some shots may be links (currently away from home).

As for ducks, here's a couple for you Strutz!

And another sort of bird...

Nice shots from both of you guys. What cameras are you using?

Unsound @ Fri Jun 22, 2012 9:51 pm

Great shots guys!

It appears my camera does not have lilve view. I do have a tripod though, so I think I may spend some time in the backyard tomorrow and hopefully get a few decent shots up in the near future.

5D2 with a few very nice lenses. Nothing long though.

Very nice, full frame. Wish I had one of those, but settled for the 7D and got my "big honking lens" which cost more than the camera body! Many times a great lens makes a huge difference. It's an expensive interest! I have a long list of lenses I would like. I just got two new ND filters I ordered from B&H, can't wait to use them.

And wonderful bucolic photo as well. Looks like a great place!

Off the macro summer topic, but here's an HDR photo (9 exposures) I took of a 1920's Tudor style estate on the market for over 8 million.
