Well Icy, I'll call your 10 years and raise you 20 as I lived and worked for 30 years in an Aboriginal Community, not just took my holidays there. I did, in those 30 years (I still have a house there where I go for my holidays) meet some miserable nasty people, but they were a small minority. Of course it may have had something to do with treating them with respect and not contempt. Respect is always a good way to begin a relationship, but that would work well if you were living in a small native community or some similar sized community anywhere on earth. Nobody likes it when the newcomer shows up with a superior attitude.

And that's all great fife but that doesn't erase my experiences. Let's be clear, nobody showed up on this particular reserve with a superior attitude. When my family first leased the land, I was 10 years old.

fifeboy fifeboy:
I don't understand what you said in the first part here, unless you are saying your 10 years is more important than their 150-500 years, but I think the part about expectations is the real BS.

I'm not surprised you don't understand, so let me be clear.

What happened to Natives in the past wasn't my doing. They had zero reason to treat me like shit and my family all because we were white. It's not acceptable.

Pout much :P :P I can pout, because I'm Icy and they were mean to me when I was 10. And...and...and...they need to get over the generations of being treated like shit because they aren't ....no they aren't...ME!

Wow, thanks for your contribution again fife. I appreciated the throw-back to elementary school.

I suspected you would Icy, as your attitude is much like that of a grade 4. As in your "only I can remember insults from the past, everyone else needs to get on and work so hard, like me."

He has a point. Working on a reserve I saw several adults go out of their way to be cruel to a non native child.....but then again I've witnessed plenty of white adults being nasty to native kids, blaming the for all sorts of shit and excluding them. Assholes are everywhere. Saw less of it when we were overseas amongst the Chinese, but then again they aren't big on playing after school

And I agree with everything you said here. Well, except the Chinese thing, as I have little or no experience with it. Perhaps my point should have been, quit with the jerkish behaviour, we are adults now. Because someone caused you a problem in the past, dislike that person, not the race they represent. If I could be allowed to "hate" the people who were "mean" to me in grade school, based on their national background, I would be an American hater. As it is I am not, I just don't have anything to do with the individuals who were such jerks back then. My wife would be really pissed otherwise.

Working in a Metis community for 30 years, I saw little or no bad behaviour against children of white teachers or other people who were there for a stay. The community elders would not have stood for it. White kids got on quite well, and white teachers did too, as long as they didn't start drinking and acting like drunken jerks on weekends or start acting like they were some sort of "great white hope" there to rescue the locals from their indian-ness.

Metis communities are funny because the people range from native looking to white. Racism has a bit of trouble taking root when there is a diversity of racial characteristics...... even within the same family.

Our local Wendake Chief, Konrad Sioui, looks more Scot than native...

...I heard he was 7% native.

Ha, my brother reminded me what used to be the building that is now an NDP campaign office in Kelowna.

Ever heard of the store San Francisco? That place that sells bongs and dildos?

Our motto... if we can't get you high, we'll get you off. :D

The people of the town I lived in were Metis, and considered themselves 100% aboriginal. Only about 5% of the town was non Metis. Most of the others were Treaty people. And the Metis there ranged from dark to blond. Still considered themselves Metis.

fife, perhaps you need further clarification as you seem to have difficulty with your comprehension.

My experience was not just people being "mean" to me, it was a whole host of other problems such as:

-Death threats (To both my father and me personally).
-Being run off the road in vehicles, ATV's and even bicycles.
-Having our boat rammed at the public dock.
-Having our property broken into.
-Having property stolen numerous times, including a vehicle. (later found burnt)
-OPP Investigations over threats via the local "officer".

You're acting like this is a simple case of one group of people calling another names and people pouting because their feelings were hurt. It's far more. You trivializing it is just plain juvenile.

So put yourself in my shoes. Have your family terrorized for 10 years, witness your father having his life threatened and then come back and see how you feel. Take your 30 years and reverse them. As I've said before, I'd like to have a different experience with our FN people, unfortunately, that's all I've ever known.

But why live poor at all? There's nothign that says FNs need to live any poorer than the rest of Canadians.

If the choice is to live poor in the bush, let them. But don't keep pouring in billions to support that.
Agreed, I just don't have an answer, and if I did, it would not be the thing that worked anyway! I do know that idiots like Icy who just display hatred against Native people, because of some "incident" in the past, are not helping anything.

No, I don't have an answer that will fly either. What I'm proposing won't happen because there are too many people benefitting from the current system. The natives will keep pushing for more, I think at some point Canadians will push back. Especially Asian immigrants who feel none of the European guilt. What this woman expresses is what a lot of people think, are just too scared to say because the racism hammer will come down.

But there is no explanation of why you hate all Native People. The people who stopped to help me, my sons, my daughter, my grandchildren, especially the grandchildren, have never uttered threats against you, rammed your boat or called you names. I can understand being angry with individuals, but what you do is similar to calling all Germans "Jew killers" or all southern Americans slave owners. Everyone can understand ones dislike of Nazi or slave owners, but not everyone from those places. Your problems warrant dislike of the actions of some people, not an entire race. And to top things off, you, still harbouring grudges from your youth, chastise Native People for harbouring grudges from generations of abuse at the hands of white people. Go figure.

Can't be 100% aboriginal when 1/2 or so of your ancestry is European. Thinking you are something and actually being so are two different things. Ask a full blood what he/she thinks of the Metis claiming to be 'aboriginal' They usually have a differing opinion. Natives can be just as bigoted towards the Metis as other Canadians are

And the Metis would say to the Treaty guy, "go &%$% yourself."
