Exactly lily.

US to collect Canada lumber duties until 'final' NAFTA ruling

Translation: 6 more weeks of foot dragging and more of the same.

Take a look at this PR release

$1:
Swanson expressed concern that, "this decision is the latest example of a Chapter 19 dispute settlement panel under NAFTA wrongfully and unconstitutionally trumping U.S. law," further explaining that, "the NAFTA panel in this case has improperly directed a decision that runs counter to the facts and U.S. law. The U.S. Commerce Department has consistently confirmed that, if calculated correctly, an anti-subsidy duty of nearly 20 percent is necessary to offset Canadian subsidies."

In 6 weeks this will be overturned YET AGAIN. Showing once again what is good for the US and Canada is not what is good for the US and why NAFTA is a joke at Canadas expense.

Ooooh, Lefties, that's gotta hurt. I guess NAFTA is working, eh? Wouldn't have happened without it!

Are you sure they aren't just trying to save face because of all the heat they have been getting lately in regards to them(Americans) wanting to expand their free trade partners?

I have lent my support to the notion that the US should payback the $5B.

Ooooh, Cons if it worked so well why was this even an issue over and over and over again?

Give us our money back please.

Btw I am more for free trade than against it and I have on occasion voted for a left wing party.

Yanks just don't like it when they are getting shafted by it.....they better get use to it because we will reap the benefits of NAFTA not them.

Famous last words.

Flap flap flap flap.....

I am only wrong if you guys continue to cheat and steal and renege on your deals like some other people we know.....

Huh, Hitler has a bit of an extra chin there hmmmmm.

Another fine example of you.

Maybe. The softwood tariffs imposed by the US government undermines the argument for free trade, which, as economists know, benefits nations in the aggregate.

I was reading comments by paper analysts today who said that Canada will get some but not all of the $5 billion back.

Did he do stand up as well?

Huh, maybe you had better retract this comment then.

Mostly working!

Still better than the options though. Without NAFTA, Canadian softwood lumber would be subject to the tariffs, even under the WTO.

Speculation. Who is to say that this wouldn't have happened without NAFTA in the 1st place?

Because the original tariffs on softwood lumber began in the early 1980s. This is a dispute that has literally gone on for decades. In fact, we can thank NAFTA for ending these ridiculous tariffs. Its hard to deny otherwise.

Well done NAFTA.

NAFTA was a stupid thing to do. Which is why these possible talks with Japan about free-trade scare the crap out of me. 8O
