Speculation. Who is to say that this wouldn't have happened without NAFTA in the 1st place?

Because the original tariffs on softwood lumber began in the early 1980s. This is a dispute that has literally gone on for decades. In fact, we can thank NAFTA for ending these ridiculous tariffs. Its hard to deny otherwise.

Well done NAFTA.

I have already established that this was another stall tactic thus the 'ridiculous tariffs' are alive and well and being collected as we speak, thank you very much. Window dressing is not a solution. I have zero faith and even less patience with the US.

I hold Canada responsible for 1)caving in the 1st place and 2) not holding the US to account and 3) allowing more of Canada's key industries to be sold **cough**Terasen**cough** without a mention let alone a fight. Isn't trade the art of negotiation? The US must be sorely disappointed will the wussies on this side of the boarder, Mr Dithers and Harper who?

Interesting.... I'm going to quote my father on this one. (Although he was usually referring to something I had said I would do, rather than this)

"I'll believe it when I see it."

Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people

Good article on the history of the softwood lumber dispute. From the CATO Institute.

NAFTA is a joke. The US didn't do this because of a NAFTA ruleing. They did this because they know that they've milked this cash cow for all it's worth and now all they're doing is making MORE enamies. It's a cheap cop out to make NAFTA look good and to conserve damage.

The canadian government could have ended this long ago if they had done one of two things

1.) Lobby the US Congress

or

2,) Filed a Suit in US trade court. NAFTA is standing law in the US and thus all it takes to ensure that a NAFTA ruling gets upheld its to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

But its wonderful how the liberals have been running around ignoring their foreign ministry and then bitching about how bad america is. The US cannot sue itself to recompense canadian lumber companies, nor will any interest group lobby for someone else. Its not americans fault that the Canadian govt. is so ignorant of the US political process.

A myth, I've been downing Canadian Beer quite regularly, and the going rate is 5% and hardly "strong"

Avro Avro:
Ooooh, Cons if it worked so well why was this even an issue over and over and over again?

Because the liberal party hasn't been reading the Foreign Ministries "How the US Government Works For The Mentally Retarded" handbooks.
