American and Canadian customs

Well, every mall has a Santa, I don't know if that is the same, but that'll be gone soon.
We don't have to pledge allegiance in our schools.
No more Lords prayer.
Most schools play the national anthem in the morning.
Most people's favorite sport is hockey.
The lack of use of the word "eh"
What the heck is "up to my ears in alligators" ? I hear this from a lot of Americans.
No sports scholarships here because of the way our Universities are funded. Definitely means people have less incentive to go into athletics, or more incentive to go into Academics, depending on how you look at it.

Edit: Oops, we don't have it off. Sentiment still stands
We do.

Like I said, I deal with Americans all day, so I had today off. Usually there is an option to work the Canadian Stat holidays so I was unsure. Thanks for the update.

Oh I thought you meant we, as in Canadians. O.K. got you now.

I thought you meant Remembrance Day. It's a stat here in BC and several other provinces, but apparently it isn't in Ontario.
No, it isn't in Ontario.

Hi. Out of curiousity, are there any customs Americans have that Canadians think are strange and vice versa?
The one American custom that I've never understood is ..
Why don't people take their "outside" shoes/footwear off in the house ?
I've spoken to a few Americans about this & some have explained it's a regional thing! eg: People who live in Florida where the weather is nice ...
don't v. people who live in (for example) Montana, where the climate changes
do remove their footwear. I've only heard one American state that showing ones feet is/was considered rude ... hence the wearing of shoes custom.
For me, it's customary to remove footwear no matter the season before entering any home.... same rules apply in Sweden too.

It depends on the household here. I wasn't raised to take my shoes off, but I raise my kids to do.

While were on the subject,
Here's some other cultural differences, which some might see as odd:
completely obsessed with money.
fanatical about their personal appearance.
loud, rude, and completely ignorant of the cultures of other countries.
obsessed about celebrities.
obsessed with guns.
fat.
Arrogant.
war hungry.
I make my entire living off of American customers
I wonder how many customers you'd have if they knew what you thought of them. That seems to be a common Canadian trait but it always strikes me as being quite hypocritical, hating the US and everything about it but perfectly willing to sponge off our economy.

In a commercial transaction the buyer is as important as the seller, so who is to say who is "sponging" off whom?

Delwin said "I make my entire living off of American customers." I'm sure there are other suppliers who would love to service his customers.
I think you can figure out who is sponging off whom.

Oh give it a rest. Everyone knows the stereotypes, I just wrote them down. Hypersensitive pansies wasn't on the list, so you have clearly demonstrated that each American has their own unique qualities. Good for you for demonstrating the inaccuracies of generalising a populace.

Delwin is one person.
You can just as easily claim that the US is "sponging" off Canada's natural resources - I wouldn't, though, because it's fairly obvious that both sides are equally as important.
A buyer needs a seller just as much as a seller needs a buyer.

Boxing day
Also wondering if you have any diff. traditions for Christmass its self vs our traditions.
We return gifts we don't like on this day/ buy new ones for those we haven't got gifts for yet because of the good deals after Xmas.
Also, it is customary to call people and be the first to say: "Christmas Box on you!"

Shh! I am trying to confound Americans!
P.S. at least is in my family and about 2/3 of the people I know.
