Also, it is customary to call people and be the first to say: "Christmas Box on you!"

It is?

Of course it is.

And let's not forget the ritual slaughter of the Christmas Moose.

As a Canadian who has lived in the states for half his life I can firmly say that the only differences are the accents and Americans are more socially closed off. Canadians are much more willing to strike up a random conversation with a stranger or offer to help someone.

It can probably be boiled down to the American "every man for himself" way of thinking as opposed to the Canadian "all for one and one for all" way of life.

Of course there are exceptions, but I am speaking generally.

I have lived in Detroit, NYC, Chicago, and Miami and it is like this everywhere.
Good for you for demonstrating the inaccuracies of generalising a populace.
I try.

That seems to be a common Canadian trait but it always strikes me as being quite hypocritical, hating the US and everything about it but perfectly willing to sponge off our economy.
Maybe you could address the fact that you take so much offence to being stereotyped, but are quite willing to do it yourself. That to me seems quite hypocritical.

What the heck is "up to my ears in alligators" ? I hear this from a lot of Americans.

Origin unknown but like a lot of american expressions it is basically a "punchline" of a much more lengthly remark.

It comes from a thing about maintaining focus and seeking a set goal.

"It is reasonable to try to stay focused but when you are up to your ass in alligators it is sometimes difficult to remember your initial intention was to drain the swamp."

It's a bit colourful but most such things are.........

I never understood wearing your shoes around the house either. Then again, most of them never understood why we don't waer them.

Hi. Out of curiousity, are there any customs Americans have that Canadians think are strange and vice versa?

Depends which state they are from. It can be said for the provinces here I mean most people think the Newfies are quite strange and the Frenchies.

I have a friend from Mississippi and I think she is quite strange. :P Apparently we both speak the same language yet at times I think we would disagree on that but that can be said for all the people in this country too. Anyway differences would be slang, culture, attitude, eating, and a few other things.

wearing/not wearing shoes in the house is more likely to be an urban/rural matter.

In principle the purpose of leaving your shoes outside is to leave the mud and muck out there with them.

"get you boots off...I've just swept the floor."

sound familiar?????

I'm just going by my own personal experience.
