All this talk about the US being our friend is crap. Nations don't have friends, they have interests. It is in the USA's interest to maintain relatively open access to Canadian resources, so they give us access to their markets in exchange.
The problem is that Canadian politicians, especially the simpering puppies in the Conservative Party and the right wing of the Liberal Party, buy into the whole "friendship" model as a way to please their corporate masters.
Lets have a little look around the world and see how that's worked out for others. Oops, it looks like being the USA's "friend" can lead to bombing, invasions, dirty little wars, manipulation of the political system, assassination, jailing under questionable circumstances, and other problems.
Those who look at the US in a more mature light and recognise that it's nobody's friend, tend to fair a lot better in the long run. Western Europe and Japan come to mind.
So far we've been neighbors, allies and friends with the states for something like 2 centuries now. Except for a couple fights, we'be been quite neighborly to each other.
So when is this invasion happening again?
As soon as we say no? I didn't say that it was just invasion though, did I? You tried to over-simplify things. I won't speculate on why you would do such a thing Ridenrain, I'll just point back to how I described members of the Conservative Party.
So if we refuse to agree that car bumpers should have the same low speed crash specifications, food lablels have the same ingredient details, and gas fireplaces have the same safety rating specifications, then we'll get invaded by the US?
Is that what they tell you in those trade union magazines?
Sorry. not buying it and history just isn't on you're side here.
Do you not have a TV? Turn it on and find a channel not dripping in US programming and ads. Ever buy anything not made in China but bought at yet another US company? If you think we haven't already been invaded your without a brain.
You're a manufacturing plant owner in Ontario and you sell, say 80% of you're widgets in the US. Canada demands you're widgets are red and the US demands you're widgets are blue. It's slow and costly to run 2 different lines or processes for each country, so if you could get the 2 countries to agree on a common standard, you could make and ship to either country with higher productivity.
From my perspective, this isn't about trading flags and soverenty, it's about smoothing out trade barriers.
Economically and culturally most definitely. There was a time when you could tell the difference between us but not today. Most of our companies were bought out and now all the talent and time that once enriched this country now goes towards another countries best interests.
We're a small country beside a very large and dominant one so some bleed is to be expected. I'm happy that we still play hockey and curl but I'm sick of seeing criminal gheto gang culture becomming popular here.
We've been fighting this for decades and I'd say we're holding our own but I can't see pissing off our major market and getting kozy with China being any solution.
What do you expect Scrape? We are small northern country of 30 million people bordering a massive 300 million people capitalist empire, which is arguably the most powerful and influential nation in the world.
Its called globalization. Look it up.
Are the Americans running scared now that they have that most Americans buy Japanese cars now, and almost all their products are made in China? Hell no. Oh and what about the fact most of their electronics are Japanese?
Trade has nothing to do with culture. Canada has our hockey, curling, political sovereignty, etc., but when you have to same-language bordering countries, your bound to have similar if not exactly the same cultures.
Canada is the best country in the world.. bar none..I have said it before.. I have travelled to many countries and we are the best place to live. we take for granted what we have. we should spend more time fighting for it than critising it.. I have visited many states and the US is ok but wouldnt want to live there..
