Congratulations!
Remember to try the Poutine.
Have a good move to your new home - Canada! But why would you want to settle down in Quebec? Great job opportunities here in Alberta. Any way....enjoy the BBQ's and yes, BYOB!

I miss poutine!! Its soooo good!
Worry not Panzerknacker. It will all come clear in your first few days and after a while you will be just as confused as the rest of the population.
Even poutine (french fried potatos with gravy & curd cheese) can get out of hand. Would you like brown or white sause (gravy) CHOSE THE BROWN!!! The white is a mystery, and best left that way!
OH! About the BBQ issue. Any good host worth his salt will have more than a few cold ones for you. If you desire a certain brand it is best to BYOB. This way you can pass off one of yours to try something new. ![Beers [BB]](./images/smilies/beers.gif)

I heard for example that when you attend a BBQ, you have to bring your own beers, is that true?
You don't have to... but it's probably the best ice-breaker in the country.

Think of it like bringing a bottle of wine to dinner.... just a friendly gesture to your host. There's really no "rules", and it's pretty hard to actually offend someone, at least where I'm from.
I can only imagine what this thread sounds like to you...
Canadian Tire Money (everyone stop and think about those three words, and how they must sound to someone who doesn't know what it is... Canadians need special money for their tires?

)

Welcome to Canada, Panzer!
I hope you're aware of Quebec's language laws...
You mean not being able to get medical help unless you speak French?

No, you shouldn't have any trouble getting healthcare service in English in Quebec, at least in the Montreal area.
But you mentioned your daughter. I don't know what your plans are for her education but if you were thinking of enrolling her in an English-language public school - forget it. French schools only for immigrants due to a controversial law here in Quebec.

Bring me beer! I only accept Blue.
Oh, yeah, you might not like Canadian beer, it depends what you are used to...

Yes, bring your own beer(B.Y.O.B.), you will also need a cooler with ice to keep the pops cold. Also, bring your own lawn chairs(the collapsing ones that go in a bag with a strap to carry over your shoulder is best as it leaves your hands free to carry the beer cooler), a coolie is also handy to help keep the beer you are drinking cold and make it easily identifyable amongst all the other beers and empties lying around. Usually it is a good thing to bring a dish of some sort to contribute to the BBQ as well.
I agree that a lawn chair is a good idea. I often run out of patio chairs at my deck parties. A few brews and an edition to the buffet table (a pie, cake, potato salad, ect.) is welcomed.
BUT I usualy have a bottle of wine and a "Two Four" (new canadian term for you Panz. It is a box of 24 beers) for guests. Am I better than the average CDN host? OH BOY ARE YOU GUYS CHEAP!!!
Panz. you are welcome to my place when you and yours arrive. Ottawa is not that far and I am a former Montrealer. I will put a beer in your hand and toast you.

We might just do that, it's just that it would have been too expensive to study in the English speaking part of Canada. You pay way more money as a foreign student and quebec has a deal with France that let's students study for the same fee as any Canadian.(my wife is French)
After she gets her diploma, we might venture west to Vancouver or another province. I don't know yet and actually I love not knowing for the moment.

I feel like anything could happen.
you know, somehow it makes sense to bring your own beer.
Go to the other coast...all the cool people live there
