It depends very much on what you want Aussie. If you want an urban experience with a myriad of cultures, try Toronto. If you want a city with a slightyly less diverse population but spectacular surroundings (when you can see them) go with Vancouver.

Personally, I like Vancouver. I've been to Toronto and I have trouble breathing.

As for our welfare system, I'm assuming you mean the whole system in general, so I would have to say it's pretty good. You won't go bankrupt if you get hurt, but you may have to wait a bit depending on the ailment. If you lose your job, you'll be fine for a while.

There is no such thing as a good city. Move rural.

And why, pray tell, would someone who appears to be incapable of using punctuation want to know about the welfare system? What exactly do you plan on doing in Canada?

Skip both major cities and go straight to Kingston ON. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. (Figured I'd get the jail jokes in before anyone else...)

A lot of people get pissy at Toronto, because “Toronto thinks it’s the center of the universe” and while that’s true to some extent, it is still a great city.

the reason why i ask about the welfare system over there is because when i move over there i might not be able to find a job straight away and therfore i might need to rely on welfare for awhile so i can get by its not to be a bludger i dont like bludgers and its hard enough for me to get work over here in australia and the last thing i want to do is move to another country and live off welfare coz there are more than enough of those types here in australia.

when i move to canada i would like to work very hard and contribute everything that ive got to canadian society.

Just quickly perusing your posts, I think you should probably be thinking about places like:

Sharbot Lake, ON
Vilna, AB
Cut Knife, SK

Nice towns...you should fit in

Purely out of curiosity, how old are you? What kind of job are you qualified for? Might go a long way to assisting you in your quest for the perfect city.

Save up money. I don't think Canada will give welfare to a newly landed immigrant will they?

In my readings on Canadian immigration, I get the distinct feeling that they will not give welfare to an immigrant.

You might want to read about this a bit more before you just decide to move to Canada, JohnFromOz. At the moment the CIC's policy pretty much says that they're only going to take you in if you can contribute to society.

You've got a few classes to choose from but what most of us "Future Canadians" apply under is the Skilled Worker class. It's the easiest one to get through, save marrying a true Canadian. If you're interested in welfare and having a hard time finding a job then I would venture to guess that you're not very highly trained.

Don't flee Australia simply because you can't find work, pull yourself up by your bootstraps first, and then decide whether or not you want to go to Canada. I would start by checking out the CIC's website, and you can make the judgement call from there.

Double post, Shane, (I'm having problems too) may want to delete one of them.

I agree with the above posts that say Canada probably won't give welfare to someone who shows up from another country and doesn't work. I'll also say that it can be really hard for a foreigner to get a job, because you need to go through that whole green card thing. First, get some qualifications. Then, FROM Australia try and find a job online, apply, and make clear that you need the company to get a green card for you so you can work. After 2 (?) years you can apply for landed immigrant status and change jobs.

Gotta be careful. My one friend just graduated from school (here) and when his education visa expired, he couldn't find a company to sponsor him fast enough and got deported back to Iceland!

As far as cities go, you'd probably feel at home in Vancouver ^__^

Fixed that for you ;)

I was born in Toronto, and I rather like the place. While I'm was raised a rube, nothing is quite as soothing as the thick heady odour of the GTA.
