What do you imagine Canada will be like in the year 2050 ? What would you like to see ?

Johnny-Canuck @ Thu Feb 13, 2003 6:47 pm

Quebec will be gone. Victoria, Kamloops, and Swift Current will be major cities. And there will only be Toronto and Montreal left in the NHL for Canadian teams. This of coruse, is from a political point of view.

Victoria as a major city? hmmmm. They'll have to do something about their distinction for having the largest cult following next to Geneva. They'll also have to do something about politicians disappearing and turning up dead before elections.

course some of the old money they have and corruption might sway the masses. Hard to say...........

Well, it's always a hard thing to predict what a nation may be like by 2050. I'll just mention a few of my predictions:

Regarding Quebec

Well, let's face it, for 135 years, Quebec has been complaining about their treatement in Canada, always threatening to seperate (it became more serious in the 1960s of course), but the bottom line is, Quebec is running a huge defecit and debt, and it's going nowhere fast in terms of economy. Quebec needs Canada as much as, to use a rather dull comparison, a person needs money to survive. Quebec will still be a part of Canada. Whether they'll still be vocal about seperating as they were in the latter half of last century, or quiet as they seem to be now, is the only undecided question.

The Military

Just because I'm a staunch supporter of the Canadian Forces, I'll mention a bit on this. Canadians will continue to have the age-old frame of mind that "we're a colony and thus, why should we have a real military - one that can defend us from everything? The US will protect us". This will continue to spell doom for the Canadian Forces in getting adequate funding, just as it has always done throughout its history, even before Canada was a nation, our military was being screwed! However, there will be events, like the recent terrorist attacks against the US, that will make the public cry out in support of the military. But once the initial cries for better defence funding start to die down and we resume the status quo, successive governments will go back to their traditional mode of chipping away from the Canadian Forces bit by bit.

Healthcare

I would predict a hiberate system with private services being offered, but being paid for by the public system (MCP, etc.). This will mean that all non-critical surgeries could be done in private clinics at the cost of the public system, thus freeing up the public system to gear more towards ER services and other major surgeries.

The Environment

I'm not much of an environment guy myself, but I live on this planet so I have to do something to help it ;) On this issue, Kyoto will long be a thing of the past, perhaps with newer agreements being in place by 2050. I, for one, would hope that our nation continues to exploit the wind resource (which we haven't even begun to really do so far) instead of oil, coal and natural gas plants. This will significantly bring down energy consumption, and that's a good thing for all involved.

That's all I have to contribute on the topic right now

Regards

Canada in 2050? We'll all have flying cars and the work-week will only be 4 days long and nobody will ever get sick because of anti-biotics and we'll all be friends with everybody on earth.

Oh wait, that's what those damned hippies promised me for the year 2000 and it never happened.

This is a suckers game, predicting the future. Here's what I'd like to see and think will be acheivable:

We might still be a country.

Capitalism may be recognised as being as unworkable as communism.

Smoking will once again be allowed in bars.

We will have alternative fuels.

Intolerance will still be fashionable on the far right.

Cats will illegal, but I'll still have three.

The big green truck will still be working the way a truck should.

Maybe people should consider the second question in the original post .

Aaron @ Fri Mar 28, 2003 2:57 pm

Ok.. to answer the second question..
*I'd like to see :

a cleaner environment.
- vehicles to be run by alternative fuels .. 8)
- stiffer penalties for major crimes
- more efficient recycling done by all.. (ya right)

Canada (and the rest of the world) will be in a post-apocalyptic state. Society as we know it will not exist. Only the children of the earth will have survived mans final winter. Beware of "The Night of the Bleeding Stars".
