Hi;
I'm an ex-fitter & rag-picker (aero-engine & supply tech) who pulled the pin in 1990 after 23+ years of service.
Worked my way up through the ranks to Corporal (That's another story) and amongst other things, served three years in NATO with 4 Svc Bn. in Lahr Germany and on board HMCS Ojibwa and Okanagan (only lasted a few months though so don't consider myself a real submariner). I've skiied down black diamond hills in the Black Forest, almost shot someone during the FLQ crisis, flown and sailed over & sailed under the Bermuda triangle, and jumped out of perfectly good aircraft.
Enjoyed my time in the military but noticed a definite change in attitudes when I got back to Canada in 1975. We seemed to have changed from a poor military machine, who had some really good people trying to make it work, to a briefcase-carrying business that catered to an officer's career path. To hell with honour and doing and saying what's right! (Now you see why I rose through the ranks so spectacularily.)
Anyway, I have lots of other memories that civvies could only hope to have and pity them to some extent. I do respect their decision not to join however. It's not for everyone.
Cheers,
ex-airforce

Just over 30 years in the navy, two of them on exchange with the USN and almost four with the Brits on a direct training and operations exchange.
I'd do it all over again, except that I'm having too much fun in my 2nd career.
