After many requests and one death threat, it's back from the ashes of Alliance Atlantis' failed forums.

No real rules, but it would be nice to keep the pics of things military/naval etc. Past quizzes included aircraft/ships/armour/artillery/small arms/troops/uniform bits/combat engineering gizmos/transport/ration tins.

Anybody can answer. If you drove, flew, sailed, blew up or built what is represented by the picture in question, please jump in and answer. Better yet, give us some detail. (SprCForr did this when a Bailey Bridge ID photo went up. Gave us all accurate instructions on how to build them and now we have Bailey Bridges in our garages.)

I'm not running this. I'm starting it and then I'll be heading back to sea for a few months. So, I would request that if you have a photo or a graphic of something that others might like to work on, please put it up. The poster should congratulate the first correct answer.

So... we'll start with an airplane... because they're so much fun to shoot at.

   

Westland Lysander, RAF

Delivered to RAF shortly before WWII. It was used as a trainer and ground attack aircraft, although when more capable aircraft were available its ground attack role was switched to reconaissance.

Good eye Nate_7! Perhaps the most famous role for this aircraft was its duty flying agents into occupied Europe during WWII. The RCAF was very much involved and received very little credit for the job.

BTW, the only two operational Lysanders are ex-RCAF.

Bingo! And for what it's worth that very same gun was in service in WW2.

   

If the design works and does it's job well, why change it?

   

I'm going to guess, a Badger AEV.

If I am correct, I will consume many beer to celebrate my acute knowledge of ground hoggery.

If I am NOT correct, I will consume many beer to relieve the agony of failure and reflect on my need to improve my knowledge.

So, one way or the other, I will consume many beer... a behaviour I learned from the AA guns' crews in many a ship.

   

It doesn't work! It's unstabilized and cannot track anything faster than a propeller driven, low flying aircraft. That particular gun was replaced in the 1950s by the 3"50 twin mount. To put it mildly... the 40mm bofor, although a good gun in its day, is a useless piece of crap today. (DND acquired them from museums to fit in the MCDVs).
