Against, and I'll take it one further, it's treason and should be treated as such.

It's not "treason." It's not 1862 anymore.

If a viable, identifiable group of people choose to make the democratic decision to opt out of a federation, then they have every right to do so.

We're not going to send in the troops to oppose them, nor should we.

I don't believe in sending in the troops either, just take the ring leaders and up against the wall they go.

I understand my history. Im just saying.

It wasn’t a shot at you – I was merely commenting on the fact that it’s a feature of our political landscape

If you were a true Canadian you would choose a death that took both founding societies into account. The Guillotine would be better. Here's to Marat.

I’m against it. I believe in Confederation and the principles that guided it then and preserve it now. My Canada includes Quebec, Manitoba, New Brunswick, etc and I question the motives of shortsighted automatons that clamour for separatism.

I agree. There was nothing wrong with the principles behind confederation. But that said, things change. Your Canada may include Quebec, but for many Quebecers (49.5% in 1995), their Quebec doesn't include "Canada." I'm not trying to kick them out. I'm simply saying that if they vote to go democratically, there's nothing the rest of Canada can do to stop them. So let's make the best of it.

On top of that, I don't see how the principles of Confederation really relate to todays' mantra of "multiculturalism" and "diversity." I mean, after all, Canada began as little more than a loose conglomeration of people who shared nothing in common other than the fact that they didn't want to be American.

How does that reflect today's Trudeaupian "Multicult?"

We don't shoot political dissidents in Canada.

Personally, I like it that way.

True.

I can believe how anyone can say being part of a democratic society they would be against self-determination? Nowhere even in the constitution of Canada it says people cannot leave. If it did then we might as well call this the Soviet Union of Canada.
Um....I think you are looking too much into the question. He is not asking is it Ok for one to separate at any time. I think he is asking do you want people to separate. Am I right Juggernaut?

juggernaut @ Fri Mar 23, 2007 5:47 pm

Yep your right Tricks!!

juggernaut @ Fri Mar 23, 2007 5:52 pm

This topic is very contraversial, everyone has a right to think what they think and post it.

Tricks @ Fri Mar 23, 2007 6:12 pm

So for everyone who said yes, they technically said yes to people separating.

Ah okay. Well I’m for both self-determination and separatism.

I hope one-day British Columbia will be a nation and or possibly join the west in our own confederation.

Just to be clear Statist is the belief in a powerful federal government. Stalinist could work too but that's not my label.

Sorry I misread that.

juggernaut @ Fri Mar 23, 2007 6:17 pm

its thier right to say what ever they want, they could say fuck canada for all i care.and yes they did say that.

Sure I'm for the west creating it's own confederation with still Queen Elizabeth the second as it's head of state.

Good fucking luck!!!

My Canada includes Quebec, Manitoba, New Brunswick, etc and I question the motives of shortsighted automatons that clamour for separatism. Separation, in a Canadian context, has nothing to do with self-determination (this has a specific intention and it wasn’t for nation-states like Canada), democracy (how is this democratic? I’d love to hear this one) or rational thought – it’s born out of nationalism (which, at its core, is problematic) and simple naivety.

Also, people talk of seperatism because they are being whiny little bitches who want mroe than their fair share and so decide to take advantage of those who want to keep this great country united...

I just want to be free from Ottawa and have more sovereignty over our affairs…
