What's the surprise? I posted here a few weeks ago that she was retiring at the end of July. Doesn't anyone read my posts? I gave you guys the scoop and you didn't pay attention. 8O

Just ignore the part I posted on her replacement being a male though.

SprCForr SprCForr:
What I'd like to know is how the CBC became the farm team for the Governor-Generalcy?

hrmm more importantly, how can one secure a job in the CBC and then manipulate it to become the Governor General? It doesn't seem all that of an unpleasent job.

Particularly if you somehow successfully manage to campaign on the platform that "Canada doesn't need the Governor General to do work anymore" but to succesfully stay away from the unfavorable "Canada doesn't need a Governor General"

"I declare the Games of Vancouver open, celebrating the 21st Winter Olympiad!"

This is what Jean will say come 2010.

I would have preferred someone more meaningful.

I know her because she's at the news everyday here in quebec but... what the  ??
We had a chinese GG, here in quebec we have a wheel chaired LG.

I don't have anything against them. But if the government still wants to show that it's a worthful title, they should stop to appoint people just to show canada is a multiculturalist country.

Some months ago they were talking about Marc Garneau, the first canadian in space. Now, that's is representating. :!:

It says in her biography, that she is fluent in 5 languages. English, French, Spanish, Italian and Haitian Creole. Is Haitian Creole a real language??? I was under the impression it was pidgin or the French version of ebonics, and at best a dialect. Correct me if I am wrong, maybe it is a real language.

She sounds like an inspirational person who could help with Quebec and Canada relations. She symbolizes multiculturalism. She could possibly cool the separatist thing down a little, but only time will tell.It is worth a try.I am not a fan of the monarchy or the Libranos but we need to strengthen national unity.I just hope she doesn't go on a spending spree with our tax dollars.

ShepherdsDog @ Thu Aug 04, 2005 1:32 am

She's given a budget by the government. She can't spend anymore than what elected officials give her

Lets see, credentials for being Governor General

1 Minority CHECK
2 Left-wing CBC journalist CHECK
3 Bleeding heart socialist CHECK
4 Born outside of Canada CHECK
5 Being on the Government dole CHECK

Well, she’s got all that.

Just think 6 years from now Wendy Mesley couldn’t be GG unless the Liberals redefine some of the points.

-Mario- @ Thu Aug 04, 2005 7:49 am

I think Marc Garneau would have been a far better choice.

I think it’s time ALL vestiges of the British were removed from Canada. The way it is now is just death by a thousand cuts anyway.
The Quebeckers hate any reminders that they are a conquered people and the British link has been replaced by successive Liberal governments with the cult of multicult.

While multicult is less than inspiring it appears to be what Canadians want.

You guys deserve no history and that’s what you are going to get.
Fuck the people who settled and built this country, nobody cares anyway.
The sooner we get Aunty Betty of the money and replace her with some warm fuzzy and meaningless icon the better. Maybe PET could be on the back of our coins?
We should also make sure no institution is left with any links to the Crown.
That means deleting the R from the RCMP etc , and get rid of those redcoats, far too British.

Also we need to ensure our military have no tradition or British heritage. Mind you, Hellyer did a good job there already. They can rally around a rainbow flag or whatever will replace their nasty Anglo regimental colours.
While we are at it Parliament looks way too anglo, lets build a new more inclusive building that truly echoes what the new Canada is about. We could emulate a bit of every culture that is now part of Canada, and all those statues of Victoria and the Army....far too warlike and Limey.

Yes its time to get rid of our embarrasing British/ Celtic roots. I agree wholeheartedly with all you Canadian nationalists. Wipe out the crown. Let’s stand for nothing but multicult, health care and our charter. All inspiring stuff!

-Mario- @ Thu Aug 04, 2005 8:42 am

Get rid of the GG and LG plus the Senators... the moneys we will save!!

Blue_Nose @ Thu Aug 04, 2005 8:54 am

I don't see the point of the Governer General/Lieutenant Governers, but removing traditional customs like the Mounties uniforms, etc, doesn't make sense. While we don't need the token royal reps, we still have history and heritage based on our link with the Commonwealth.

As far as celtic heritage: I can't speak for the rest of Canada, as it's likely not as significant, but I happen to be, along with many Nova Scotians, proud of our Scottish heritage.

4 Born outside of Canada CHECK...

I think you'll find Vincent Massey (1952-1959) was the first GG to be born in Canada so they're actually reverting to tradition by picking a foreign born

EyeBrock @ Thu Aug 04, 2005 9:11 am

Bit of a difference in coming from Haiti to coming from the UK , tradition wise that is. Canada does not have a tradition of having foreign born GG's my good multicult advocate IcedCap.

Canadians were all British citizens up until Jan 1st 1947. Therefore British citizens were appointed GG's. When the new citizenship act came in GG's had to be Canadian citizens. Massey was the first GG appointed after the act came into force.

Nice try at rewriting Canadian tradition though.
